Replace MDM With GDM3

Postby tff on Thu Apr 26, 2012 11:48 am

I have just installed the latest LMDE and I am very please with it however I wonder how I would go about replacing MDM with GDM3 as I wish to use the themes on Gnome Look with it and MDM does not seem to support them?

Thanks in advance.

If you have GDM3 installed already, just type 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3' and when prompted, specify the login manager you want. If not installed already, type 'sudo apt-get install gdm3' and again when prompted, specify the login manager.

Thats great I have got it installed correctly however I seem to be missing the gui to configure it 'gdmsetup' - I type the command and I get the following:

The program 'gdmsetup' can be found in the following packages:
* gdm
* gdm3

I installed via the gdm3 package and do not have this application and a:

sudo apt-get install gdmsetp

Returns no packages. Any Ideas?

The gdmsetup component doesn't come as a separate package, it is automatically installed along with GDM (but not with GDM3). So if you want to have it available, you need to install GDM. The most recent version of it (2.20.11-4) is in the Debian Stable repository. If you don't want to enable that repository, or don't know how, you can download the package from here (scroll down to the foot of the page):

Would that mean adding:

Code: Select all
deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free
deb-src ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stable main

to my /etc/apt/sources.list and then running an update on apt-get, would that make it available?

That's right.

When you have installed GDM, gdmsetup should appear on your panel menu under Settings/Login window. When launching it, you will be asked for your password.

Argh! This is frustrating, I have got gdm working fine with gdmsetup as well however it in turn has removed gnome-control-center and all its related.

gdm = Themes and gdmsetup - but no gnome-control-center
gdm3 = Themes but no gdmsetup
mdm = No Themes at all.

Any way to keep gdm alongside the gnome-control-center??

Sorry, I can't advise you about that, as I'm running an Xfce desktop with its related control centre. Perhaps I should have mentioned that before.
