Standard available in the repository: Lottanzb

Or you could try NNTPGrab (https://launchpad.net/~openftd/+archive/ppa). When using this PPA, do not install OpenFTD since this program is no longer developed/maintained due to last year Dutch court ruling. NNTPGrab however, is stiull maintained and it works easily and good. No difficult settings or such.

There's also a program called Ninan: http://www.ninan.org. Don't know much about this program, but it looks simple too.

Pan is not wonderful but does download binaries (but no upload). I was a bit surprised that it is not in the repo.

Get it from here http://pkgs.org/download/pan down the bottom of the page.

Go for the ubuntu 11 deb, the ubuntu12 needs newer dependencies. I have a very new LMDE installation and the deb installed straight away, but do keep an eye open for dependencies.
edit: or maybe the debian squeeze package, that should work.

Also maybe look at installing parchive - thats in the repo - for parity files.

Pan is more a usenet reader, not a usenet downloader. It is possible to download files from usenet by using Pan, but a dedicated usenet downloader works much better.

Just one of those sites like "getdeb" but for different distros. If you follow the link right through you eventually end up at (this is for the ubuntu11 i386 package - obviously you need to select a package that works with your computer architecture)

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/u ... 2_i386.deb

@nomko
but a dedicated usenet downloader works much better.

yes, but what?

i was checking out that NNTPGrab program and it seems it only handles nzb files. im looking for something that can download groups and files. ive heard about pan for a long time so it seemed to have a lot of features.

i love sabnzbd! but it only handles nzb files. i need more of a full program like newsbin pro

Pan does not take up much in the way of resources, I dont download much in the way of binaries these days, but it will do that. I still use it every day to check on some newsgroups. If I ever need to upload then I am back to WINE and I use NewsRover.

Just give Pan a try, not much lost if you don't like it.

What do you mean by this? You want to download the files directly?

The advantage of a dedicated usenet downloader such as Lottanzb or NNTPGrab is that they can check the downloade files immediatly with the added par2 files and extract them also. This while downloading the next group/file/movie/whatever. If you use Pan, then you must do all this by yourself manually using a terminal or using other programs.

have you tried sabnzbd? i think that's the best one out there right now. what i mean by groups is you download all the headers for a group like alt.b.images.cars then you download 1000 files at time if you want. at least that's how it worked in newsbin pro. the other programs simply take a nzb and download the files that come with it. hopefully that made sense.
