K3B killed mint 12 boot!

Hi guys I've installed Mint 12 dual boot (with cinnamon) for a friend on his old vista laptop, he loves it! he asked me if i could get a audio cd burning app so i went googling and tried the k3b burning program, big mistake! it installed a ton of packages and now mint is stuck on a black screen. I could easily do a reinstallation but i would like to try fix this as i consider myself an advanced noob but no idea where to begin, so if anyone has tips i'd be grateful also while i'm here can anyone recommend a good cd audio burning (for the car) app that doesn't break the system. Sounds like you installed K3b from the web. Always check first to see if the application you want is already available through synaptic. Your success rate will be dramatically improved.

OK mate thanks for the reply, must of downloaded a deb file. was hoping for a simple way to fix but probably way too much hassle, i'll get reinstalling. lesson learned...
