Something is taking down my server, cannot isolate cause

Postby tommelee on Sat Apr 28, 2012 5:30 pm

Greetings---I am a n00b but maybe not quite as noobtastic as some. I'm running an HP Proliant N40L as a home server running most recent Mint, Sabnzbd+/Sickbeard/Headphones/Couchpotato/Plex/Zoneminder, using a static IP. Typically over night, although today at ~5pm, my server disconnects from the network. I typically run this system headless, and during these crashes I can no longer VNC in. Yesterday I attached the screen/mouse/keyboard for the next crash. Today it crashed and I suspected I could just move the mouse to get in and see what's happened, as the system is powered on. No joy, it will not wake up.

I have attempted to view logs, but oddly the mintsystem log contains a bunch of weird overwrites that look possibly like a firefox update and then closes with mintSystem stopped. Syslog shows nothing after 07:58 this morning, strange because zoneminder has been recording events all day.

I believe my issue is either Plex, Zoneminder, or Firefox. Can anyone give me guidance on how to narrow down the culprit? I previously had the same exact setup less plex and zoneminder on a dell mini 10, and it ran for months at a time without issue.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Have you ruled out any hardware issues? With all the services you have installed, do any of them require a desktop gui? If not, you might try installing a true server o/s such as Ubuntu Server or Debian w/o gui. If a non gui o/s is not possible you might want to install Mint again and add each service one at a time to isolate the issue if you are sure it is not a hardware problem.
The instructions suggested Microsoft Vista or better, so I installed Linux.

My actual eventual plan with this machine is to install unRaid, once hard drive prices come down a little bit more and I can afford to fill it up. I can't guarantee it's not a hardware issue, but I think it's extremely unlikely. Is there a log I'm not looking at? Or is there a way to force the machine to be more verbose with logging?

I'm enough of a noob that going completely non-UI isn't a step I'm reayd to take...just yet.

Try looking at /var/log/messages and any other files that might be pertinent.
