Recovery of lost data

Postby finley on Sat Apr 28, 2012 7:52 pm

Hello Mint forums,
I am not new to Linux, but this is something I have not encountered before.

I have installed LMDE today, after which I decided to use gparted to resize and move a partition on a secondary hard drive I use for storing media.

While I was waiting for this to finish I decided to change a few settings of the Cinnamon DE. After editing a few Compiz settings I clicked on the option "Reload window manager" via the right click on the compiz fusion tray icon. This had the unfortunate effect of killing the whole session (is this a known issue?), presenting me with the MDM login screen again.

I then used gparted to "check" the partition (which I think performs an fsck), which has given me roughly 80% of my expected data. The resize seems to have been successful, but some data is in the wrong place, e.g. some of my music files actually contain audio from movies I had (which are now completely gone). Most stuff seems OK, but accessing some files just causes errors.

I have tried running testdisk, but a deep search can only recover previous partitions, and not the current one in it's state before the resizing.

So 2 questions:
Is there any way to recover the data?

If not is there any way I can easily weed out the data that is no good? Like I mentioned above some files are 100% there, but others are not, and it would be nice to know what albums are corrupted without having to listen to them all the way through.

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

The Cinnamon window manager, muffin, is not compatible with compiz, basically none of the Gnome 3 based compositing managers are compatible with compiz eg clutter, mutter or muffin.

Compiz is compatible with XFCE, LXDE, KDE or Mate, though in Mate you also have to turn of its windows manager, marco to avoid high CPU usuage.

You could try ddrescue to recover your files.

OK so I won't bother with Compiz then.

But I have also seen the same behavior when restarting Cinnamon via Alt+f2 r. If I do it once, the window manager reloads within the session, but if I do it another time the session is killed, and you need to login again. I assume this is a separate issue as I am now using muffin as my WM.

Regarding the data, is there any way recover it without another drive? I had a look at ddrescue but it seems to require another HD larger than the one I have.
