How to update LMDE without any issues?

Postby fida1989 on Sat Apr 28, 2012 2:12 pm

I need instructions on how to update my LMDE setup without any breakage. :) I mean what options to choose in the update manager and other things. I don't want to break my running system. :?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you mean from UP3 => UP4, so far the best way I've found without breakage is to drop toe command line and do it.

in terminal sudo init 1
login and
sudo apt-get update
then
apt-get dist-upgrade

I recommend at least backup your home directory before you attempt this, if you can clone your drive before even better... I tested with virtualbox several times to make sure I got it right, something else to consider.....

mine is a little simple, but here's a good full walk-through of the process http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2

Good luck!

I was running LMDE 201109 and decided to update the darn thing last week. Wish I'd left it alone TBH. First problem was that it installed Gnome 3 which buggered up all my desktop settings and layout. Managed to get back to a reasonable looking setup by installing Mate, but had to manually change the layout. Then I had all sorts of freeze up problems, double icons for every app and on at least 4 occasions, I had to do a hard reboot which resulted in my Home directory becoming read-only which could only be resolved by re-mounting the drives.

I've now wiped the hard drive and installed LMDE 201204 with Cinnamon. But this time I've partitioned the drive so the O.S. has only 50Gb to go wrong.

So there ya go....that was my experience of the updater. I'm no Linux expert but I've been using Ubuntu or Mint daily since 2008.
