I can't add PPAs to Linux Mint Debian

Postby aloje on Mon Apr 30, 2012 7:55 am

Hello,

I have been trying to install the Jupiter Applet, but I can' add the Jupiter PPA to the sources list. (It's the same for any PPA that I try to add).

I am running Mint Debian.

I am not even sure that I can add PPA to the Debian edition of Mint, can I?

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

So, I fixed the first error, that I could install no PPA at all:

In this file: /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/softwareproperties/ppa.py
I changed
sourceslistd = apt_pkg.Config.find_dir("Dir::Etc::sourceparts")
to
sourceslistd = apt_pkg.config.find_dir("Dir::Etc::sourceparts")
(config not capitalized!)

I could not run sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/jupiter

However, the PPA doesn't include debian packages, so it's useless. I hope Jupiter developers port Jupiter to Debian.

keeping in mind that you shouldn't use ubuntu pkgs in debian (for any reason!!) and it's not a question of if, it's when it will break because of that, knowing that, you already did the hardest part.

now look in synaptic for jupiter and try it (it might even work :mrgreen: ) if not google search launchpad ppa webupd8team jupiter and try any other build (you have precise, oneiric and natty that should work)

You can see in : http://www.jupiterapplet.org/downloads.html , jupiter is only tested in ubuntu dan fuduntu.
But maybe you can try package jupiter_0.0.50.2_all.deb from sourceforge
Use it on your own risk :!:

I'm currently in the same situation as you are...

Up until the other day I've been running both LMDE & LM 12 LXDE on my netbook with jupiter installed and it's been working without problem.
In my "old" LMDE install I used version 0.0.49 and now more recently with LM 12 LXDE I added the ppa's for the Ubuntu-based version.

Now - with the new respins I decided to turn back to LMDE on the netbook, and started with the XFCE-version. For this install I can still download and install the the 0.0.53 but it doesn't do me any good since I can't seem to get it added to the panel. And with regards to the Mate/Cinnamon version I'm not even sure it's worth bothering... I also tried the new python version but that one complains about dependencies.

This is a pity because I've yet to find another applet/utility that does what jupiter does for my 1000HE in one applet, and as a matter of fact I'm having a hard time finding anything that lets me control the CPU frequency in my XFCE install, not to talk about switching between external/internal monitor.

Now I no longer know what to do with this netbook with regards to linux flavor. What I like so much about LMDE is that I might never have to reinstall it again. (Never is a very long time, but still). LM 12 on the other hand is ubuntu-based, which does mean that it has an end date, but in that one I can still get Jupiter.

- I don't know... a dream scenario would of course be that fewt added support for debian, but...

Edit: it does run, because I get a message saying I'm running the "maximum performance mode" at startup, but I have no way of changing it since I still can't get it added to my panel... thought that XfApplet could help, but I'm not sure on the "how"
