Thx 4 the reply homie...but...

Code: Select all
 $ sudo aptitude  install ubuntu-restricted-extras
[sudo] password for :
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  adobe-flash-properties-gtk{a} adobe-flashplugin apport{a}
  apport-hooks-medibuntu{a} apport-symptoms{a} ca-certificates-java{a}
  gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 icedtea-6-jre-cacao{a} icedtea-6-jre-jamvm{a}
  icedtea-netx{a} icedtea-plugin{a} icedtea6-plugin
  libaccess-bridge-java{a} libaccess-bridge-java-jni{a}
  libavcodec-extra-53{b} libavutil-extra-51{ab} libnss3-1d{a} liboil0.3{a}
  libopenjpeg2{a} libvo-aacenc0{a} libvo-amrwbenc0{a} openjdk-6-jre{a}
  openjdk-6-jre-headless{a} openjdk-6-jre-lib{a} python-apport{a}
  ttf-mscorefonts-installer tzdata-java{a} ubuntu-restricted-addons
  ubuntu-restricted-extras
0 packages upgraded, 29 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
Need to get 48,6 MB of archives. After unpacking 132 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libavcodec-extra-53: Conflicts: libavcodec53 but 4:0.7.3-0ubuntu0.11.10.1 is installed.
  libavutil-extra-51: Conflicts: libavutil51 but 4:0.7.3-0ubuntu0.11.10.1 is installed.
  mint-flashplugin: Conflicts: flashplugin-nonfree which is a virtual package.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

     Keep the following packages at their current version:
1)     adobe-flash-properties-gtk [Not Installed]
2)     adobe-flashplugin [Not Installed]
3)     libavcodec-extra-53 [Not Installed]
4)     libavutil-extra-51 [Not Installed]

     Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
5)     ubuntu-restricted-addons recommends adobe-flashplugin | flashplugin-insta
6)     ubuntu-restricted-extras recommends libavcodec-extra-53

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?]

no man...I think other is the cause of not working DVD drive! something related to recognition of hardware...no matter of codecs or plugins

same thing
Code: Select all
Fallo de reproducción:
DVDRead no pudo abrir el disco «/dev/dvd»
Su entrada no puede abrirse:
VLC es incapaz de abrir el MRL «dvd:///dev/dvd». Ver el registro para más detalles.

btw the Dvd drive HP is brand new!

That is different (VLC program, media video player with included codecs) from not seeing the device via the OS
--and you already have installed VLC correctly, yes or not?
    As well, you don't indicate yet why the device is not seen by the OS

In a terminal
Code: Select all
ls -l /dev/dvd
inxi -F
--all OS detected devices..

If it is really not being detected, no LED is showing when the system boots, then I would be checking the hardware, specifically that the cabling for that device is correctly attached (making a good electrical connection) between itself and the mainboard of your system (ribbon cable, usually)..

ubuntu, file system mounts..

https://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2010 ... in-ubuntu/
    Another way to do it is simply browse through the subfolders in /media (or could even be /mnt on older systems) until you find the one that shows your disc (you’ll need to have one in the drive, of course).

In fact 4 a box with 256 mb ram and processor @ 2.26ghz mint\lxde is not appropiate!IT IS A FALLACY THAT MINT\LDXE IS FOR OBSOLETE EQUIPMENT

Xp runs smooth and no problems with the dvd reader instead mint\lxde ran extremally forced(almost hanging)

bye!
