Mint 11 Won't Mount External USB Device - Digital Recorder

Postby what-is-a-computer? on Mon Apr 30, 2012 5:31 pm

I'm trying to mount an external digital recorder which is a USB device on my laptop.
I plug it in and Mint 11 does not read that there is even a device plugged in.
I did a test and plugged in a USB external hard drive and it reads that fine the moment I plug it in.
Does anyone know what the issue is in it not reading the digital recorder?

Also it reads the digital recorder fine on my desktop, just not on this laptop.

Thanks.

So the dvr is being recognized, but it sounds like you are expecting to appear as an external drive? Have you checked in Sound Preferences to see if it appears as an audio device? If not then plug it in and immediately afterwards run
Code: Select all
dmesg | tail -50
.
Does this output give any clues, errors?

Okay. I'll try the command and report back, Remoulder.

No, I don't expect it to appear as a hard drive. That external hard drive was just another item that I tried to see if it was reading it. the digital recorder should pop up in my home folder so that I can copy the audio files. It doesn't. So I'll try your suggestion.

thanks.

Remoulder, it is in the sound preferences as hardware that needs to be configured. So what do I do with it? It should pop up in my home folder automatically. It does on all my desktops. Just not on this laptop.
thanks!

I just did the command and there's a bunch of items that say usb_set_interface failed, tons of them, probably 10 or 15.

P.S. Oh, and something says usb 1-1.2 reset full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address (whatever that is). Does that help?

Do you know what standard the usb devices on your pc and the dvr meet? This bug report seems to imply there may be a kernel issue involved here with differing usb levels, though it specifically talks about usb 3. Have you tried using the dvr via a usb hub?

No, I haven't tried a hub. I guess I could do that. I think I have one in a box somewhere. Finding it is another story.

And it's not a dvr. It's just a digital audio pocket recorder. I have no idea what the standard is or what that even means. I'll try, I guess, using a hub if that's what you recommend. Thanks!

By dvr I meant digital voice recorder! Am not saying a hub will solve the issue only that it's worth trying if there's an issue with usb compatibility. My only other suggestion is to try different usb ports as sometimes you get a mix of supported standards, i.e. many newer laptops are coming with a mix of USB 3 and USB 2 ports.

Okay. Thanks. I'll try it.

Also, my printer won't work. I cannot print anything. Any ideas on that? Maybe I should start a different thread for the printer.

PS And I already plugged it into different ports. None of them will work. Rats!
