Nvidia Optimus (Bumblebee?)

Post by Lishy »

Hi guys. I have one of those NVIDIA 540M laptop cards. Whenever I run a 3d game, it usually turns up like this:

I'm using the most recent version of Linux Mint Debian.

Anyways, I hard LMDE does not support Optimus NVIDIA cards? Someone on IRC told me to use Bumblebee... I tried what I could understand about the tutorial, but even after installing stuff and all that... It still didn't work! D:

So could someone please better explain to me how to install Optimus/Bumblebee on LMDE? The tutorial in question is this:
http://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee

I've tried what I could, and installed various stuff it tells you to, but I did not notice any noticeable effects. Should I be concerned if I might have done this incorrectly?

Is it even the correct tutorial? Or does Bumblebee not support LMDE yet period? So should I just switch to a different distro?

For anyone unfamiliar:
http://bumblebee-project.org/install.html#Debian

So any better explanations how to install on LMDE or if it is compatible?

If you can't get bumblebee to work (I couldn't) there's probably no other way.. I blame nvidia/intel for bad linux support..

Is bumblebee compatible with LMDE? I'm a new Linux user, so I'd like to know that first of all. The issue is I didn't even install it properly!

Hi,

I've been researching Bumblebee for my GT 540M (currrently on Mint12 standard).

From what I can tell there should be no reason that Debian wouldn't work (http://bumblebee-project.org/install.html#Debian). You can ask the guys directly at https://twitter.com/Team_Bumblebee.

Have you worked through the troubleshooting points here: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu ... leshooting ?

Bumblebee works sweetly on Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon, easy without configuration, by adding the PPA. The discrete card (nvidia) is OFF by default and cpu runs 10-20 degrees cooler. Optirun works ok too. All stable, and the only program I ever have probs with, is transmission-gtk sometimes (seldom) freezes.

Debian however, is another story. Searching online, from what I can see, nobody successfully runs Bumblebee on Debian OS.
Am I wrong? Has anybody got Bumblebee successfully running on Debian??
If so, step-by-step how to?

I have just installed Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon 64bit, and I'll first attempt to install bumblebee with ubuntu's ppa (pehaps try 2 intel driver ppas, such as x-org edgers and x-swat).
All launchpad / ubuntu.

On debian I had bumblebee working in the wheezy/sid (testing/unstable) version with http://suwako.nomanga.net/ repository. It works on stable(debian released) kernels, ev en sid, but not with liquorix kernel, also had several bugs regarding kernel modules/drivers (mounting ntfs, virtualbox errors, optirun crash on drawing a triangle in inkscape :)) )
Also gave it a shot in crunchbang (debian wheezy based) same issues.

Debian stable is verry out of date, old DE, old kernel and so on, thus kind of laggy on newer hardware. I'd highly recommend it for a server but not for gaming/webdesign/graphics/laptops. So installing the stable version, and manually installing bumblebee is kind of useless.

Back to the issue, if the launchpad ppas method fails, i'll be back with some other ways of installing bumblebee (and also a newer kernel, 3.6 or 3.7 hopefully stable).
