Yes, I had
qt4-config installed (forget why?). I let it un-install , did the upgrade, then re-installed. It went ok.
Can't say the same will work for you.
That
libfontconfig1-2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 is one of the ubuntu font files that Clem uses to make the LMDE fonts so nice.
You could turn off the Mint repo, and upgrade, but you MAY loose your font quality.

I am fully updated in LMDE/SID (except for the two .cil packages mentioned earlier).
Well, I guess if there is a secret, its that I am too dim to really know what I am doing...
1. Turning ON/OFF Mint repo when necessary.
2. An unwise combo of using apt-get, and aptitude, just to see what happens.
So FAR so good.
Now to upgrade those darn .cil pkgs. Going to give Greg's advise a go.
