Hi Greg

I'll give that a try tomorrow. I had already gotten rid of mono in my LMDE/Gnome partition . I guess I am mostly holding on to it in LMDE/Mate just to see if and when it get upgraded ok. I would think there would be a fix, as several gnome apps wont run without it. Perhaps in experimental as you suggest. I really like Pinta.

You could do the reverse in the non-mono partition. Try and install Tomboy and a new mono install and see if it will let you.

That did it, thanks. I see that that sets the priority of where package updates come from. Was that just left over as a relic from when I first installed LMDE and I neglected to update it when upgrading to sid?

the old preferences file sets the mint-specific pkgs with a higher priority (and that is fine if you are running the standard lmde setup);
with sid (or, imo, even with testing) one should do what you just did: level all the priorities, apparently the only one that can run sid with the old preferences file is Gene (but that is, i guess, a secret he won't tell us )

Yes, I had qt4-config installed (forget why?). I let it un-install , did the upgrade, then re-installed. It went ok.
Can't say the same will work for you.

That libfontconfig1-2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 is one of the ubuntu font files that Clem uses to make the LMDE fonts so nice.
You could turn off the Mint repo, and upgrade, but you MAY loose your font quality.

Hi Dan, I am not a Virtualbox expert but I do have one setup on Linuxmint 12 with an XP VM for my daughter's homework. You can un-install Virtualbox without losing your virtual setup. The Virtualbox VMs sit in your /home/.VirtualBox directory and a new installation will find and use them even months later. Not that has anything to do with Virtualbox not loading, but did you copy the .VirtualBox folder over from your old broken /home folder?

So, just go into Synaptic and remove Virtualbox. Restart and then go back into Synaptic and re-install. There are two versions, the OSE or Open Source Edition and the Oracle one which is also in the Mint repos. The Oracle one has the most functionality and is sometimes a newer version. They will both find and use the VMs in your /home folder.

A few ideas to try

post the contents of /var/log/vbox-install.log if there is one

Try sudo update-alternatives --config virtualbox to see if you have references to multiple versions - select the latest if you have.

I have the OSE version installed in my system using AMD64 Liquorix kernels and it runs fine. It sounds like your system has an issue with the kernel modules. Do you have an old install of KMS? Try running sudo apt-get install virtualbox and post the result. Then try sudo apt-get -f install and post that result. If you run sudo apt-get dist-upgrade what errors are thrown up.

Try running module assistant (you might have to install it first, and make sure you have your kernel headers installed)

sudo m-a a-i virtualbox

Then if that does not provide a solution ...

And if no one else has any bright ideas then I would try to fix the issue by un-installing again then manually remove any references to Virtualbox from your system (outside of your home folder). As sudo run nautilus and set view to show hidden files. Remove /etc/init.d/virtualbox and /etc/default/virtualbox, /usr/lib/virtualbox and /usr/share/virtualbox. Also look for and remove /dev/vboxusb /dev/vboxdrv and /dev/vboxnetctl

Then start again.

The problem is unlikely to go away by just waiting for an update.

I am going to reboot to an older kernel and try to install and see what happens.
If that works I will try it with my latest kernel.
