How to install Jockey in lmde [Solved]

Postby corcaigher on Tue May 01, 2012 1:10 am

Has anyone figured out how to get jockey installed for lmde? I wanted to try the ATI proprietary driver but not without the help of Jockey.

no, jockey is not ported to lmde. there was some work on it about one year ago but the development stopped and i don't see a schedule to bring it back.

so if you really need those ati drivers, you have to do it manually.

Besides using Jockey, I believe there are other way to install ATI driver in Debian based distros:

1. Debian way

2. ATI .run way

3. smxi script.

Jockey takes the guesswork out of installing the proprietary software. Too many variables otherwise and not worth the trouble. The process is ridiculously difficult for the average user.

Only for someone that can't read.

1) Debian way - ATIProprietary - Debian Wiki - http://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary
2) Use smxi

Relying on a shiny GUI to do things for you is more a Windows mindset. Take the time to learn how your system works and you will get a lot more out of Linux.

The Debian way takes at most 5 minutes, and poof like magic it works.

Ikey Doherty had successfully gotten Jockey to work on his distro (SolusOS) http://solusos.com/

So it is possible. He also has a "First Run Wizard" that runs on installation and assists in driver, firewall, et

http://community.linuxmint.com/idea/view/2426
1. SolusOS has a "first run wizard" which in some ways is like the mint welcome screen, but it has five steps which go through whatever the installation didn't cover, like installing drivers. Mint could have a first run wizard like this that asks about drivers, (for people who have the CD version) about upgrading to the dvd edition and adding codecs, and possibly other things.

Its worth a look.

ok, Gene, it's true that Ikey ported jockey and before it was stable and free of errors abandoned it for first run wizard, which is not stable at the moment as well, you know it. how many times did it fail on you? and how many times failed dkms or smxi? yeahh dkms failed once on me (in sid) and badly (i had to switch to nouveau while that install lasted.

point being, jockey (or any similar tool) can be interesting, but doesn't replace the easiness of the existent methods and tools (just my opinion).

Correct (for the most part). :D

Jockey in SolusOS did have some bugs, but did work for me (with the update on RC2). "First Run Wizard" had some bugs as well, but also worked for me on RC3.
To be fair, these were still RC's and not the final. Development had been on hold for a little, but now seems to be back on track. I am confident the bugs have been worked out.

LMDE 201204RC .iso had several bugs as well.

LMDE 201204

I’d like to thank all the people who tested the RC release and sent us feedback. We identified 68 bugs in this release and we’re currently down to 19 bugs left.

Granted Install of Nvidia is pretty easy with either DKMS, or SMXI.
I like SMXI. Its always worked.
I guess my reply was to the OP who inquired about installing ATI drivers, which can be more of a problem from what I read and whether its possible to have Jockey in LMDE.

Jockey installs fine, it will not run however. Below is the output from terminal:

So I am guessing zerozero's reply wasn't clear enough?

Stop trying to use something that is made for Ubuntu/Mint in Debian/LMDE it will NOT work.

if you really need a shiny GUI that bad then running Debian, even with the tools LMDE adds to it; is not for you. Ubuntu/Mint will all the shiny tools would suit you much better.

it is really not that hard to run one or two commands using CLI.

Used the ATI/AMD way, downloaded the driver from their site, ran the script and all is well. Installed without any problems.
