Amarok will not install

Postby markymark12 on Thu May 03, 2012 3:27 am

Just setup linux mint two days ago. One of the first things I tried to install was amarok. I had an install of amarok on my ubuntu pc. Amarok appears in the software manager and repository but it will not install. Clicking on it in software manager does nothing and if you try to install it through synaptics it will complain about several dependencies which prevents it from installing. It won't allow you to install those dependencies either. I posted a notice on amaroks boards and a very nice lady told me to speak to the people who do the distros for software, so I'm posting here. Any thoughts on when this might be fixed? I've never had trouble installing amarok before.

Broken dependencies may be the cause. Try running
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get -f install
in the terminal to fix them. Then try to install Amarok once more.

Monsta, this is the error I get when installing amarok through terminal. I just tried five minutes ago.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
amarok : Depends: amarok-utils (= 2:2.4.0-0ubuntu4~lucid1) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdelibs5 (>= 4:4.4.5) but it is not installable
Depends: libindicate-qt0 but it is not installable
Recommends: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins (>= 4:4.2.0) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: libqt4-sql-sqlite but it is not going to be installed

Well I managed to get one of the plugins installed that it was requesting but this has been the biggest pain on my tush for any of the apps that I've attempted to install on linux mint. I know someone must have this app packaged for linux mint. Even the last version of Amarok would work. Thoughts? Pliease help. I have podcasts to download and i hate banshee with a passion.

You didn't tell if you ran the command that I suggested :)

 There's only one corresponding package, and it's in the lucid-backports repo. Are you using Mint 9 Isadora (it's based on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx)?

Let's take a look at your repo list. In the terminal, run
Code: Select all
inxi -r
and post its output here.

Monsta, yes, sorry. I did run the command you recommended and posted the results after I tried to install amarok afterward. The version of Mint that i have installed is 12. Are people still running 9? The reason I switched over to LM is that it does such a great job of updating. :)

 This repo list is a total unholy mess, to say the least. How did you manage to get it in this state?

deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/debian main upstream import

These repos are for LMDE, not for Mint 12. Are you sure you don't confuse Mint 12 with the latest LMDE ISO that has been released in April 2012?
The last one also contains a typo - there should be a space before "debian".

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-backports main universe multiverse restricted
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-backports main universe multiverse restricted

These repos are for Lucid Lynx (or Mint 9) and are most likely incompatible with Mint 12.

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian backport main

Almost a duplicate: without typo this time, but with a useless "backport" word.

This repo is for even older Ubuntu release. Also, it seems to contain very old (from 2009) versions of KDE, Amarok and all that stuff. I wouldn't try to install them on a modern system.

Monsta, I was trying whatever I could to install Amarok. That's the answer to your question. It's still failing so none of my actions paid off.

Oscar, thank you so much for your help. I managed to get it installed. Unfortunately, it didn't drop a shortcut under Sound and Video and I don't know where it's located but I can search for it and add a shortcut myself. Once again, thank you for your help. Now if I could get qbittorrent to work I'd be a happy man but that's something I'm going to leave for a rainy day. :)

ZeroZero, here you go friend.

System: Host markymark64pc Kernel 3.2.0-2-486 i686 (32 bit) Distro Linux Mint Debian Edition

Now if anyone can tell me how to create a launcher on my desktop or a menu item for amarok, that would be great. It installed and I can launch it from a command line but a menu item would be so much nicer. I just need to know where amarok is installed to. I can create a shortcut from there.

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the help that you have given to a linux mint newbie. There's not a huge learning curve since I have been using ubuntu for a year now but I do have a lot to learn.

markymark,
you already realised that what you have installed is lmde (the debian ed. of mint) and not mint 12 (the ubuntu v.) they are different beasts all together  lmde is not as user-friendly as the ubuntu v., tho it's a fine system (it's the only i run)

with that said, first you have to decide if you want to stay with lmde or install lisa;
second, the sources.list, they were a mess (as Monsta pointed out) you have to tide that up if you decide to keep it;
and lastly, this amarok thingy, strange  what is the output of
Code: Select all
apt policy amarok
share that with us please

Funny thing is that I thought I was downloading and burning Linux MInt KDE. I was scratching my head for hours when I first installed it because I used the link on LM's page for LM 12 KDE and installed Debian. I could install KDE over this but I'm not stressing. Oh, and yes, I know Ubuntu is friendlier but after Ubuntu 10 their OS started to create problems for a lot of people. When I tried to install 11 I lost my display, which was a common occurrence for a lot of folks. This ticked off a lot of people and many of us went back to Ubuntu 10.10. I've actually had Ubuntu 10.10 for about two years and liked it but found it increasingly difficult to update because it is an older OS. So, after reading and researching I decided to go with LM. My apologies for referring to it as LM 12. I thought that was what I was installing. Personally, I'm enjoy every flavor of linux that I've tried so far. Maybe that's the geek in me but i enjoy being a more hands on guy. Peace.

Oscar, I cleaned up the sources list yesterday friend. No worries there. Also, I'm pretty satisfied with LXDE for the moment. I see no reason to switch to Lisa. As mentioned, I like the idea that any updates don't require me to wipe the system like Ubuntu. That's something that I hope they'll correct in the future because LXDE did get that one right. :)
