gnome device manager

I found gnome device manager at the community linuxmint software web site and clicked on install. I am still new to linux and do not understand the error that came up, it was a pop up box that said something like " gnome device manager is virtual ", it had a red x in the box and it did not install. What does this mean " virtual?

I'm not sure the error message is correct, I think it should be saying the package can not be found. Assuming you are using Linux Mint 12, this package is not in the repositories. The gnome-device-manager was for GNOME 2 while Linux Mint 12 has switched to GNOME 3. (The package can be found and installed on Linux Mint 11.)

I went back to the community site and clicked on the vendor of the gnome device manager and the page that came up said " no repositories found ". So I think you are right it should say not found and I do have Mint 12. But I did some more looking and found I already have " system profiler and benchmark " and I installed " sysinfo ". I was looking for something to list the hardware on the computer like device manager does in windows. It looks like these programs are as close as I can get, unless you know of one better, let me know. Thanks for your reply Vincent.

IDK what Windows device manager shows, so not sure what functionality or information you are looking for. Have your tried the Generate Report button in System Profiler & Benchmark?

The basics of your system you get with:

You can run the following from the command line to list your hardware (gives similar info as hardinfo):

sudo lshw

lscpu, lspci and lsusb show various details about your CPU, PCI devices and USB devices.

[Aging Technogeek]

System Profiler will give you the same type of hardware listing as Windows Device Manager. It will not identify missing drivers like Windows Device Manager would, but missing or corrupt drivers are seldom a problem in Linux so this lack should not cause any difficulties.
