Using linux mint live cd, no internet via dongle

Hi folks,.
I picked a linux mint 12 lxde cd yesterday on the cover of a magazine, thought I'd give it view.
Loaded it up on a 10yr old desktop that we have set up upstairs in the spare room (we use a laptop mainly now with win7)

It runs winxp sp3. celeron 2.6, 2gig ram, onboard graphics.

CD loaded up ok, the only problem I have is that I can't seem to get internet thru a dongle. It "sees" the network but when I enter the password it tries connecting, fails, and the the password box pops up again.

Don't know name of dongle, it's "generic" on amazon.co.uk

Well, that seems to be an ethernet card, not a dongle.

When it was our main pc it was wired to cable, however we changed our isp and we went wireless, and bought a laptop.
I moved it upstairs about 18 months ago, bought a cheap dongle, and we've been using it as second pc.
It happily connect to the network, wirelessly, albeit a little slow sometimes.

Ok. Did the dongle come with a driver for Windows?
If so, we can try using ndiswrapper.

Sorry, don't have it, probably binned it.
If i remember, vaguely, I just plugged it in and connected.
Not much help, huh?
Is there any info I can get from winxp? or might just be easier to buy a new dongle, more suited to linux ?

Let me see...
Let's try something very basic. In your XP, go to the Device Manager, locate your dongle and take note of all the available info (device name, usb VID/PID, etc.), then post that info here. If it works under windows, it should work under linux too.
