Which distro has the most applications pre-installed?

Postby Konstellation on Fri May 04, 2012 3:06 am

Hi,

I wanna avoid wasting time looking for softwares, so I'm looking for a distro which already has most softwares pre-installed. I'd prefer it to be Ubuntu-based.

Thanks.

UE does include a ton of stuff... another option might be Sabayon, though I think they have become a bit less kitchen-sinky in recent times. And of course the full install of Slackware gives you a whole lot as well - not necessarily gui apps though.

I tried Pinguy it's awesome.

Installer is 1.7 GB though.

So either way, if you do not like default apps, you will have to a uninstall / reinstall process, quite a few times.

quality is as important as quantity

selection of default apps is an important and dfficult factor.

Hi OldManHook,

Just took a lot at PCLinuxOS Full Monty (KDE) and it seemed to be a great OS. I actually choose deb packages over rpm because deb repositories seem to have much more packages than rpm repositories; not that I think one is superior than the other one. I actually don't mind installing a few distros in my pc, which is quite fun.

Hi sunewbie,

Yup. Just like you said, it's hard to select default packages for a distro, as every person has their own favorite packages. When I was still actively using Windows back at home, I used to download lots of softwares just to try them out for fun; not that I even needed them. So I'll try out every single package and pick the ones that I like, uninstall some that I don't like, and keep some just in case my favorite package somehow refuses to run correctly.

Hi

Try Netrunner. It has KDE desktop, but has a mix of gnome and KDE apps.

If you want a very clean system, try Bodhi Linux. It has just 3 apps. LXTerminal, Synaptic and Midori, rest is in the online app center and a ton more in repos.

Whats more useful is the download option in app center. You can download and keep a copy of (.bod) files, ya, they are ..bod files. It is a script made by Jeff, Lead dev, which has .deb inside it.

I don't want a clean system. I want it DIRTY. I'll take a look at them, though.

Now with all these Ultimate Edition, PCLinuxOS Full Monty, Slacko (Puppy), and my pre-installed Linux Mint and my seldom used XP (for gaming purpose) dual-booting, I'll have my hands full.

All suggestions are welcomed & my gratitude goes to everyone for their time & effort. Thanks.
