Windows Manager Error: unable to open X display

After I tried to update gnome to latest version, the gnome shell disappeared and when to run the following command in terminal: gnome-shell. This message is dispalyed: Windows Manager Error:Unable to open X display. Any suggestions to restore this shell.

I tried reinstalling gnome through synaptic packet manager. I get following error:
Depends: gnome-core but it is not going to be installed
Depends: cheese but it is not going to be installed
Depends: gnome-games but it is not going to be installed
Depends: epiphany-extensions but it is not going to be installed

regarding this issue, well, mint12 (lisa) comes with gnome-shell 3.2, the upgrade to 3.4 is risky and not documented, furthermore you are using 2 testing ppa's, that at the moment have experimental versions of 3.4 (as you can see in your ap cache policy > the version you have installed is not the 3.4 stable, but 3.4.1-git, so a development version).

let's see, you have 2 options:
- try the full upgrade to see if you can make that v. work
for that run apt update && apt dist-upgrade (post the output here first but remember that it's a very very risky movement, if now it's broken, can be even worst after this, or you can fix it for good)

- install ppa purge (you'll have to google that) and purge all the updates related to those ppas, can't say for sure if it's going to work but it's the conservative approach.

Yes, i was connected to internet while on tty. I tried it but still no login screen. Then I ran startx. But again got the same message.

i can find one topic over at ubuntu-forums (with more than one year old) describing exactly your problem and with the same ppa's
