I'm assuming you mean update pack 4, which is the one that introduced Cinnamon and MATE.
Cinnamon: right-click the Menu button, Add/remove applets, check mark Workspace switcher.
MATE: right-click the panel, Add to Panel, Workspace Switcher.
Note that you don't need the above to use workspaces. Just press Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow key to move to previous/next workspace. Or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left/Right arrow key to move the active window to previous/next workspace. Cinnamon will automatically add new workspaces for you at the right if you drop a window there. MATE you configure how many workspaces you want with the above applet; by default it has 4 workspaces. You can also move windows to other workspaces from the window's menu.
