Help, this is the last chance for Mint

Postby RCND on Sat May 05, 2012 6:43 pm

Hello from frustrated

This may be a long post I will get to the point soon. I am using Kubuntu 11.10 on my current machine, setteled on KDE after trying several Distros. At the time I did not know about Mint. I really like it and have been wanting to try it on another rig.

I am trying to setup an older computor for my friend and his pre-school daughter. The computor is a Dell Dimension 4300 that I have used and upgraded since new. It's current configuration is as follows.

2.8Ghz Northwood Cpu, 1Ghz of Ram, 40 Gig IDE drive, Gainward GeForce4 Ti4200 Vidio card, Broadcom BCM4306 wireless card, Lite-on LNE100TX Ethernet card, and a VIA USB 2.0 and Sata controller card.

My friend does not currently have a computor therefore no internet. He does have custody of his daughter several days of the week. I want to set up a computor that has many games for both him and his daughter.

My big problem is that I can not get gl-117 to work, it would do nothing when I clicked on it. Well sort of, I did manage to get it to work with Mint 10 after messing with it for over a week. BTW it works flawlessly in Kubuntu. I was so excited because it took one simple command concerning Xorg, that I decided to reload Mint 9 for the LTS and use it as the OS. After reloading Mint 9 and putting a real nice collection of games on it, it took me about seven hours, I saved the Xorg command for last.

Well of course I couldn't remember it and typed the wrong one in. That Borked it good, I have spent all day reloading and going blind trying to find the one post with the command. I have currently reloaded Mint 10 and have stopped before doing updates or loading drivers.

Everyone I have been using Linux for not quite a year and am still a big noob. I rely on the posts for info and don't know all the nomenclature. I do know that I will never use a M$ OS again. I love Linux! I need your help me make my next post's heading "I love Mint!".

Told you it would be long. Please help me get gl-117 working again.

Later

Howdy All:

When I got it to work in Mint 10 I went into terminal from the GUI. It was a one or two line command having to do with the xserver or xorg config. I just don't remember what they were. I didn't have to shut down xserver or anything like that.

It did save the old config file if I remember right. Exited from terminal and went to gl-117 and it worked perfectly.

Thanks in advance.

Have you opened /etc/X11/xorg.conf to what it looks like and if there is anything in their about your configuration?
Is gl-117 a game or a video card?

Chances are you need to allow some sort of 2D or 3D rendering

Howdy melbo:

Remember I am a complete noob. That is a directory? Do I do a CD /etc/X11/xorg.conf to get into it? If so what am I looking for?

I didn't have to do that much the first time which is why I am not sure now.

As of now I have reloaded Mint 10 but have not upgraded or updated the drivers.

Thanks in advance

It's a file in a directory.

You could also click on Computer > Etc > X11 and then open the file xorg.conf. Then again, if you didn't know what you were looking for (and what those terminal commands did for you before), it may not be of any help.

It does look like others have had problems getting this to work:

Howdy melbo:

It was a simple command like "sudo config xorg" or something similar.
I did it at lunchtime and was surprised by it. My problem is I couldn't leave well enough alone, thinking I'd dump 10 go back to 9 for the LTS. I thought I could find the post again but that is were the frustration set in.

I am registered on that site and will check it out again. I have been to so many sites recently my memory fails me as to which one the post was in.

I really appreciate your responces. Thank you again

Howdy All:

OK I think I've got it figured out. It seems to be a resolution issue, when I went into xserver thru the GUI and set it to 1024 by 738? It worked, just have find the right refresh rate so reboot gives a usable screen.

My choices were 60 or 75Hz, playing with it earlier I would get a screen that didn't show the controll panel and forced me to reload Mint. There is surely a better way but I am still figuring out Linux and am not fluent in terminal commands.

Thanks again for the help.
