I have the same problem with Linux Mint 12 LXDE. I used Firefox and it just completely ignores me, even after a logout/login. I've had this problem before on other versions of Linux, and I was similarly unable to find any relevant help. Perhaps I have a simplistic view of things, but I don't understand why the problem occurs. I'm assuming that there's something in Linux which contains the filename of the backdrop, and that setting the backdrop using Firefox (or whatever) changes that to the appropriate file. How can this operation fail? It doesn't appear to be very complicated?
