no desktop effects after apt-get upgrade

hi,

first of all sorry for my bad english.
i'm running mint 10 on my notebook with a geforce 8400m gs inside.
a few days ago i upgraded my system to kernel 2.6.35-32-generic.
after a reboot it just gave me a command line on tty1.
i installed the newest nvidia driver (295.40) but it did not solved the problem.
first neither nvidia-current nor nvidia-173, nor *-185 solved the problem.
now nvidia-current works (do not know why) but i'm not able to activate desktop effects.
when i run nvidia-settings it tells me that i "do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver...".
running nvidia-xconfig as root did not affect anything.
lsmod says that nvidia driver is loaded.
i'm also not able to install another driver by using "additional hardware drivers".

any ideas?

Mint 10 has reached end of life (no more updates from now on). I'm afraid you will have to switch to either a newer version or to version 9 (which is LTS). I can't help you and even if I could, I would still recommend you to switch your Mint version; running outdated versions of software is extremely unsafe.
