Very confused by Cinnamon/MATE workspaces/viewports

Postby DougB on Sat May 05, 2012 2:45 pm

In LMDE with update pack 3 I'm used to switching regularly between several workspaces.
Live LMDE201204 is getting me confused by Cinnamon and MATE. Do either of them allow multiple workspaces and have a switcher, and if so, how to I find it? If not, are viewports the alternative, and if so, how do they work?
Could someone please enlighten me?
Thanks
Doug

I'm assuming you mean update pack 4, which is the one that introduced Cinnamon and MATE.

Cinnamon: right-click the Menu button, Add/remove applets, check mark Workspace switcher.
MATE: right-click the panel, Add to Panel, Workspace Switcher.

Note that you don't need the above to use workspaces. Just press Ctrl+Alt+Left/Right arrow key to move to previous/next workspace. Or Ctrl+Alt+Shift+Left/Right arrow key to move the active window to previous/next workspace. Cinnamon will automatically add new workspaces for you at the right if you drop a window there. MATE you configure how many workspaces you want with the above applet; by default it has 4 workspaces. You can also move windows to other workspaces from the window's menu.

Thanks, that was very helpful.
MATE: I don't know why workspace switcher didn't appear before; it's there now - SOLVED

Cinnamon: workspace switcher ditto - SOLVED.
NOT SOLVED: I don't seem to be able to get Cinnamon to create new workspaces in the way you describe - what do you mean by a window and how to drop it on the right?

On the other hand I've discovered the magic corner on the upper left which shrinks workspaces and allows you to add new ones as desired - it's marvellous!

Whoops. For Cinnamon you have indeed described the way to add workspaces. By default you have two, but you can add new workspaces from the upper-left corner hotspot overview mode. The way I described to do this is outdated, not working on Cinnamon 1.4. Oops...

Many thanks indeed - that's been very helpful and won me over to Cinnamon!
