Laptop isn't recognizing my DVD as an operating system?

Postby vballkihc53 on Sat May 05, 2012 12:20 am

Hi! I am a TOTAL newbie to Linux, and I can't even get my computer to boot from a dvd. I've already burned two separate dvd,s (one was a dvd+r, this one is a dvd+rw but I dont even know if that matters). I changed my BIOS settings to prioritize DVDs over the hard disk on my computer, but every single time I restart my computer it goes boots up as plain, old windows! I pressed a bunch of keys and a couple of times it asked me to choose which operating system I would like to run, but it only gave windows 7 as an option.
Is there something I'm missing? Thats a rhetorical question, because I know there is. Please, Linux Masters, help me!
My laptop is an HP envy 15-3040nr (again, I dont know if this is relevant).
Thanks thanks thanks

if you are trying to burn the .ISO file to dvd, you might be burning them wrong... you may be burning the ISO onto the dics as a data disc and not an image...

if you are using nero, throw a blank disc into the drive, start Nero Burning Software. When the New Compilation window opens giving options cancel it and click on Recorder and Burn Image...

Choose the image you want to burn then burn...

Power ISO is also an easy to use app...

Imgburn worked really well for be back when I used Windows.
