Yet another filesharing problem (Mint 12/Cinnamon/Win7)

Hello,
Well, I'm prooud I haven't lashed out in frustration thus far, but figured it was high-time to reach out for help.

I've got Mint seeing the Win7 shares just fine, but not it's own or (and this is what I'm trying to make work) the Win7 seeing the Mint shares.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Nearing wit's end as they say.

FWIW, oddities I've noticed:
nautilus-share is installed, but seems to have no effect at all on the smb.conf.
Tried to make sure permissions were set (the user on the win7 machine is Kaidu, Onesock2 on Mint) but Kaidu couldn't be added to smbshare using gpasswd, however kaidu could and onesock2 could (don't remember if I tried Onesock2).

Thanks,
Kaidu

onesock2@onesock2-desktop ~ $ testparm -s

Your mint machine is invisible to the network because your host name is 1 character too long.

The easiest way to fix this for samba purposes is to use samba itself:

Edit smb.conf as root:
Code: Select all
gksu gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Add a line to the [global] section - right under the workgroup line:
Code: Select all
netbios name = onesock2-desk

It doesn't have to be that exact name but it has to be 15 characters or less in length
While you're there add another line:
Code: Select all
name resolve order = bcast host lmhosts wins

Then save smb.conf and back in the terminal restart samba:
Code: Select all
sudo service nmbd restart

Code: Select all
sudo service smbd restart

See how far that gets you. If you have further problems you might go through the following checklist:
Samba Browsing Problems Checklist: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=88146&start=0
nautilus-share is installed, but seems to have no effect at all on the smb.conf.

It won't. It's shares are defined in /var/lib/samba/usershares. The way to show how all of these Usershares are configured is to issue the following command:
Code: Select all
net usershare info --long
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Hello,
Thanks for the reply Altair, I've actually read quite a few of your posts.

The netbios name is set shorter (I got that from one of your earlier posts) already, you may need to scroll down in the "code"section.

I'm pretty sure it also has the resolver order right, but will double-check.

I was bashing my head for a while, when I realized I'd not restarted the nmbd daemon, once I did that, the computer shows up under win7, but I can't access the share. That's where I'm stuck.

Thanks,
Kaidu

I thought maybe it was something wrong with the permissions section, but I'm totally not sure. There is a onesock2 and Kaidu user.

Here's the whole SMB.conf
Code: Select all
#
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
#
#
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
#
# Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
# commented-out examples in this file.
#  - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
#    differs from the default Samba behaviour
#  - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
#    behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
#    enough to be mentioned here
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
# "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
# errors.
# A well-established practice is to name the original file
# "smb.conf.master" and create the "real" config file with
# testparm -s smb.conf.master >smb.conf
# This minimizes the size of the really used smb.conf file
# which, according to the Samba Team, impacts performance
# However, use this with caution if your smb.conf file contains nested
# "include" statements. See Debian bug #483187 for a case
# where using a master file is not a good idea.

net usershare info --long (which needed to be sudo, btw)

No it does not. "net usershare info" will show you all the usershares you created under your own username. "net usershare info --long" will show you all shares created by everyone - including root.
EDIT:
net usershare info on its own dumps out info on the user defined shares that were created by the current user, or restricts them to share names that match the given wildcard pattern ('*' matches one or more characters, '?' matches only one character). If the '-l' or '--long' option is also given, it prints out info on user defined shares created by other users.

You have created shares using both Classic and Usershares on the same target which will eventually cause problems so I would get rid of one or the other.

What are the permissions on the target:
Code: Select all
ls -al /home/onesock2

If you don't want to post the entire output I need to see at least the ones ending in "." and ".." and "NBDownloads"

Truly appreciate the help. I'll get that list output as soon as I'm back at the house (I was home for lunch).

For some reason when I tried the net usershare info --long it hung. I waited maybe 3-5 minutes. Then broke out and re-ran it as sudo. *shrugs*
Thanks again,

The only thing I can think of that would have that affect on "net usershare" is if you aren't a member of a particular group. Run the following command:
Code: Select all
id

And see if you are a member of: 123(sambashare)
If not add yourself:
Code: Select all
sudo gpasswd -a your-user-name sambashare

Then logout and login again.

If you weren't a member of that though you would never have been able to create a share through Nautilus as a regular user - only as root.

Thanks for sticking with me.

id was fine for both onesock2 and kaidu. Both had the 123(sambashare) group.

Here's the list you mentioned earlier:

Re: Yet another filesharing problem (Mint 12/Cinnamon/Win7)

The users on your network are confusing me. Actually there are a lot of things in your description that is confusing me.

For some reason when I tried the net usershare info --long it hung. I waited maybe 3-5 minutes. Then broke out and re-ran it as sudo.

I have no explanation for that phenomenon. I can't even figure out how to reproduce it.
drwxrwxrwx 15 onesock2 sambashare 4096 2012-05-07 12:30 NBDownloads
... Interesting that sambashare group seems to own the directory, is that right?

Since the permissions on the folder are set to rwx for everyone it doesn't matter what the group is but that group of sambashare didn't happen by itself. If you didn't explicitly set it to that manually I have no explanation for why that's happening either.
Tried to make sure permissions were set (the user on the win7 machine is Kaidu, Onesock2 on Mint) but Kaidu couldn't be added to smbshare using gpasswd, however kaidu could and onesock2 could (don't remember if I tried Onesock2)

You're going to have to help me with this. Kaidu and kaidu in Linux are 2 different users. Are you setting this up assuming that one is the same as the other?
failed to connect to ONESOCK-DESK<20> (0.0.0.0). Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL

That's usually caused by the either the netbios name length problem or the name resolve order but you've fixed all that. Of course there are other impediments like a firewall or an encrypted home directory or if the machines are in different subnets. Worst case I'd access the share by ip address to bypass this netbios issue just to see if you can get access. From the Mint machine have the samba client access it's own samba server using your own ip address:
Code: Select all
nautilus smb://192.168.0.100

As far as your share is concerned, I see nothing wrong with the way it's set up although I wouldn't have shared the same folder twice. It allows guest access and the Linux permissions are set to 777 so there's nothing stopping a remote anonymous login. But remember that Windows passes the users login user name and password automatically without being asked. If you didn't set up a Linux user for that windows user and did not give him a samba password then Samba would have converted that Windows user to the guest account ( "nobody" ) automatically and he would have access.

But if you did create a user on the Mint machine that matches the user on the Windows machine and gave him a samba password different from the Windows user's login password then you will be prompted for a password in Windows. Since you only have a guest share it wouldn't have been necessary to create any users or give anyone a samba password but ....

[SOLVED] -ish: Yet another filesharing problem (Mint 12/Win7

Postby kaidukhanne on Tue May 08, 2012 1:59 pm

So, did a few things:
1. Took ownership of the folder back, no joy.
2. Created a kaidu user (had to remove the Kaidu user, it wouldn't let me have both using whatever user mgr is included in cinnamon)
3. Added kaidu to smbshare, restarted smbd and nmbd, no joy.
4. Removed the nautilus share, no joy
5. Removed share from the smb.conf
6. Turned off the firewall
7. Created the share (new name, same folder) with nautilus, no joy (also, no anon users)
8 Restarted the system (actually had to get something from the windows dual booted side)

Viola! Working. Doesn't explain why, but..
*edit-update*
I turned the ufw back on, and it stopped working.
Turned it off and it didn't help.. until I rebooted. So, something in ufw isn't opening up after it's turned off is my guess.
I guess to be a good citizen, I should review the ufw instructions and see if I can figure out why it's not working while that's on.

Not an expert on firewalls but are you allowing samba through the firewall?
Code: Select all
sudo ufw allow Samba
