LinuxMint12 does not boot

Postby awsmx on Tue May 08, 2012 5:18 am

Hi!

I got a HP Pavilion dv9000 Notebook and want to install LinuxMint12 on it. I've tried to boot with USB Stick and DVD, I've tried to Install Ubuntu 12.04 and LinuxMint but every Boot just stops at different points. My last try was booting Lisa with a DVD, i get to a black screen with "Waiting for network configuration" written on it and after 2-3 min. a white stripe appears at the top and nothing happens anymore. Any Idea what to do??

greets

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Have you checked the MD5sum of the downloaded .iso, tried the disc on another pc, burnt another disc at a slower speed with verify, ran the 'check dis for errors' option on the boot menu, booted in safe graphics mode, tried the 'nomodeset', noapci, etc boot options (n.b. on an ubuntu disc these are options at the bottom on the boot menu)?

This has to do with your video card. I had the same problems with (K)Ubuntu 12.04, Debian Testing, and Linux Mint 12. You have to add "nomodeset" do the grub boot command.

When booting from the Linux Mint 12 DVD, press any key to keep it from progressing. Ensure that the first selection is selected and press the TAB key. Then, using your arrow keys, cursor to the end of the line before the two dashes (--) and add the following term.

nomodeset

Then hit the ENTER key I believe. I've only had to do this once so I don't remember if you press another key to use the newly edited grub command.

Let me know if it works or not.

@ remoulder

I've checked the disc on another PC and it works. No boot option helps :/

@ will

Yes, it has to do with the video card. When i start the Notebook green stripes appear at the HP screen and in BIOS there are green and white stripes too. I just found this laptop in my company but i think that nothing runs on this old thing^^

Then you have a hardware fault, which 'may' just be a connector issue, but you should get it checked. There's not reason why mint should not work on this machine AFAICS, it is not that old a model, so there may be more than one problem.
