ASUS EeePc X101CH Video Drivers?

Postby Seano on Thu May 03, 2012 4:14 am

On Monday I bought my girlfriend her first computer. A little ASUS netbook - Eee PC model X101CH-BRN007W. It didn't come with any sort of operating system apart from the Express Gate Cloud, so naturally I've installed GNU/Linux for her to learn on.

The problem I have been unsuccessful in finding any solution since Monday, searching ASUS site, Ubuntu site, and here too is how to find a suitable video driver to increase the screen resolution from 800x600 to the 1024x600 that is apparently possible using other operating systems.

I have downloaded and installed linuxmint-12-gnome-dvd-32bit.iso, and it's running on her new machine reasonably well already since the second attempt*. Updates are done now too.

The hardware specifications, as much as I can get from the BIOS and the System Settings --> Info are:

ASUS Eee PC X101CH-BRN007W - ACPI BIOS
Bios Version 0501
Build Date 01/06/2012 ie. Jan 6th.
EC Firmware Version EPCE-022
Memory: 2.0 GiB
Processor: Intel Atom CPU N2600 @ 1.60Ghz x 4
Graphics: Vesa: Intel XX Graphics
Experience: Fallback
VGA Controller: Intel Cedarview Integrated Graphic Controller (rev 09) (prof-if 00 [VGA controller])

Apologies if that is not sensible information to provide, but if so, please reply if you may know how I might obtain the correct drivers for the apparently built-in video adaptor so that I might achieve the 1024x600 resolution.

* Regarding the installation, the one failure I had was at the webcam/photo part, where the 600 pixel vertical resolution did not allow for any visible onward button. Second time around, just required hitting TAB once or twice and then Enter, and all went on from there, but it was a bit confusing at first with such a little screen. Other than that, smooth as silk.

Check if this is helpful http://bbs.archbang.org/viewtopic.php?id=2439

In short, open /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change vesa to intel.

Sincere thanks for your help, mate, especially that you came back to give a bit of simpler advice.

I tried to run through the ArchLinux solution late last night, and kept a log of all the files I had to apt-get and otherwise download a tar.gz and configure-make-make install, and got lost somewhere in pixman with my pkg-config globals, and hence gave up and tried Ubuntu 12.04 to no avail. sudo ldconfig wasn't good enough at that point.

I have now redone the logical paritions on the ASUS to allow me to test out four differens OSs at once, while doing the research here on my old trusty Compaq CQ-60 which does still work okay on the old Karmic Koala, and I'm starting with a fresh install of Mint 12 now, and have 20 minutes to go until install complete.

Looking through the /etc/X11/ directory, I haven't found any xorg.conf file on the Live USB, but will wait until the install is complete and see if it might show up then.

I'll edit this post when the latest install is complete.

===========================================================================

I'm afraid I'm still unable to find any /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in the new Mint 12 install, and have been checking through as many files as I can including /usr/share/X11 and usr/lib/X11 but without much luck on a Saturday night, so ...

I'm going to reinstall Mint 11 Katya (which has a much more easily adjustable panel) and see if that will let me do the change to the xorg.conf file.
Thanks again for your help, and I might try the ArchLinux method again if this doesn't work, because there may have been some version conflicts along the way when I might have downloaded the source for a file that was a newer version, rather than get it from the usual apt-get means. It took long enough last night that I wasn't about to try again at the time.

I can see this getting sorted before the weekend is over, but thank you for pointing me in what appears to be the right direction. Wish my girlfriend would buy me a new netbook oneday and set it up for me ...

Hey there.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I don't know much about the issue myself... I've only posted the relevant-looking links that I've stumbled upon while looking up a different info for my Asus EEE 701. So I can't really vouch for the proposed solutions.

Under displays settings does it give you an option to "mirror displays"? If so uncheck and see if it does indeed give you two diplay option? might help?

Thanks again for your help and advice.

Decided to leave the resolution for a little while and focus on setting up the custom distro, with the idea that once I've got a nice system configured on a Live USB stick, I can then play around with the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and still restore the otherwise working system from USB in around 10 minutes if I mess something up.

I've also reverted to Katya which has a much nicer and more configurable GNOME desktop for my custom panels and menus, and sadly can't find any sort of Display Settings here in the Katya menus, although I remember there being such a feature in Lisa.

I'm not sure now whether to keep on with the Katya 11 config or go back to Lisa 12 and ask more questions about changing to a more familiar GNOME 2 style desktop where I can setup the panels and menus in the way I know from Ubuntu 9.10.

I've promised to have her computer ready to deliver by next week, because she's getting impatient, so she might have to put up with 800x600 or sort it out herself if I can't get my head around it by then.

Hello,
the solution to get the correct resolution on Asus X101CH is to install kernel 3.4.2, as per following procedure :
http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/06/how-to- ... buntu.html

then just reboot and you'll get the correct resolution.

cheers
