]SOLVED]What happened to my memory

Postby thegrumpyone on Tue May 08, 2012 10:03 pm

G'day to all,

I have an Intel core i5 CPU 760 @ 2.80 GHz x4 with an ATI Radeon 4300\4500 series graphics card on a H55-USB3 Motherboard and 8.5 Gig of ram that my motherboard indicates is working but Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) tells me that I have only 3.4 GiB of ram :?

Did you install the 32 bit version of 12?

the default 486 kernel for 32 bit does not access beyond 3.xG

to get beyond the limit, install the -PAE kernel.

I can't help you with the specialized kernel but if I were you, I'd be running the 64 bit version on an i5. is there a specific reason you chose the 32 bit version of mint?

If you have not done any kernel upgrade before, then use the easier method below:

1. open synaptic
2. in search field, type in something like
a. pae
b. linux-image

3. then let it search, you should see a list of kerner (linux-image-xxx-yyy)
4. find those that are
linux-image-x86-pae
or
linux-image-yyyy-x86-pae
choose one and install.
5. during installation look at what it says in synaptic..
6. when complete, reboot, and you should see the PAE kernel appear as the first line in grub start up menu.
