Mint12 is Hating on me...

Postby dunkster1 on Tue Apr 24, 2012 10:28 pm

So, i recently built a new computer, and decided that after having Ubuntu install for over a year on another computer that it was time to try something new. Enter Mint12. However, when I try to boot a live CD i made of the 64-Bit edition, it gets as far as detecting the hardware, then goes into a reboot cycle were it does the exact samething it did before. I don't know why this is happening, though I have heard of some computer having dificulty installing Mint12. My Specs:

EVGA Z68 SLI mobo
Intel Core i7 2600-K
OCZ Agility 3 60gb ssd (Windows 7)
Western Digital Green Caviar 500gb HDD
16gb Patriot Viper 1600mhz DDR3 ram
EVGA GTX570 graphics card

Thanks in advance, I hope.

Are you trying to install on the same PC that had ubuntu or is this really a new machine? If the latter you should probably rule out hardware issues first, but in either case you should verify the cd is ok by running the check for errors boot option, and/or trying a different PC/drive. You should also verify you checked the MD5sum on the .iso and burnt with verify at the slowest speed.

No, it's not the one with Ubuntu on it. Now, I tried making a USB Pendrive with Mint12 on it, and it almost worked. It went up to the point of checking all the hardware, then turned the computer off. I tested the drive by live booting to a different computer, and it worked fine.

As I said this sounds more like a hardware/configuration issue with your machine, you need to rule this out first.

What sort of hardware issues would this be? Like, none up to date drivers on the Mobo, or what?

*UPDATE*
I decided to use the windows installer of mint, and installed it. I then booted, and had to use the 3 option, the "workaround". Lo and Behold, it booted, and installed, but now when I try to boot to it, it just goes to a blank screen and eventually just shut down.

Hi,

I also have a new board with Z68 chipset (and a core i5 2500k), using the onboard graphics and maybe I have similar problems. I will write a seperate post on that as I have a bit different problems.
When your linux mint goes to that "blank screen" does your display get a signal or does it go to standby? If not, can you switch the screen with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and login? If so, look at your logs, especially syslog and Xorg.0.log under /var/log
Look for words like failed/failure and, in Xorg.0.org, lines starting with (EE) for error messages. What do they say?

Did this problem resolved? Because I have the same problem with Lisa 64-bit. I recently upgrade my rig to 8 GB RAM (I also change my Mobo and procie) so I tried to install 64-bit but hit the blank screen issue. I have Lisa 32 bit running befre with no issues, but when I upgrade the 32-bit wont enter login screen either
