[Solved ]New Hard Drive - Used Space?

Postby WhatUsernameIsFree? on Wed May 09, 2012 5:40 am

Hi all,

I've a brand new hard drive. It's 3TB, and I've used Gparted to remove the NTFS partition and create a Ext4 partition. This screen shot was taken literally just after I created the partition and formatted it to Ext4.

Two questions:
Why must it have 2 megabytes unallocated?
Secondly, why is there 44Gb used? There's nothing on the hard drive other than a lost and found folder. I also changed the 'reserve space' to 0% see if it had anything to do with that. (It doesn't)

Thanks

1. The 2MB unallocated is probably for the Master Boot Record (MBR), the thing that loads your OS up.
2. The 44GB used is something called "filesystem metadata overhead."
Read about it here http://rwmj.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/fi ... -overhead/
(By the way, Windows uses 6% of my 160GB HDD [uses up 10GB], so I am left with 150GB usable because of this reason.)

Hi,

I'm not sure it can be the master boot record, as it's a fresh format with no OS on it? I'm not too worried as it's only 2 megabytes of 3TB, but just curious.

Second, the space being used, which is my bigger concern, makes sense about the over heads.

Thanks
