Hi everybody!

I'm fairly new to using Linux, and I've yet to successfully install Mint on my laptop.

The reason I started using Linux in the first place was because in a fit of rage I threw my laptop across a room and couldn't afford to buy Windows when I got a new hard drive to replace the one that broke. I'd heard good things about Ubuntu from members of another forum I was a member of, and decided to try it.

It hasn't been as easy as I'd hoped to learn how to use an OS which assumes I know what I'm doing, but I am having fun learning. I decided to try Mint as an alternative to Ubuntu largely due to boredom and a keenness to try new things.

If I ever manage to get Mint onto my laptop, I'll let you know how I get on with it.

TTFN.

Hi Clarino, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Thanks for joining the forums! If you can use help with getting Linux Mint installed on your laptop, that is what this forum is here for

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews), and the Cinnamon Spices website for adding themes, applets and extensions to Cinnamon (and check out the Cinnamon Extras package, which will install a lot of these for your automatically). If you haven't installed Cinnamon, see here the most recent update for a teaser.

You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users.

Thanks Vincent, quick question; what is Cinnamon? Is it a bolt on for Mint, or will it work with other distros?

Cinnamon is being developed by the Linux Mint developers, and is a replacement for Gnome Shell. Just as Gnome Shell, Cinnamon runs on top of Gnome 3 as the user interface.

On Linux Mint 12 you can optionally install Cinnamon. Linux Mint 13 will have a Cinnamon edition, where Cinnamon is pre-installed. (Linux Mint 13 will also come in other editions.)

You can also install Cinnamon on other distros. Either from source, or from packages for specific distros. See a list here: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61 More and more distros are also supporting Cinnamon on their forums :D

Welcome aboard. I am still a newbie. However, I highly recommend the LMDE xfce 2012 version. It is easy to install and once you learn it you can experiment with the higher end versions without risking not having a working operating system.
