Uncle Tim wrote:Mint 11. My Thunderbird sound on new mail was working fine until about a week ago. There were some regular updates, and at least one concerning TB, as I remember. Since getting that update, the sound plays no more. The settings are the same. Clicking Play to confirm the desired WAV file does not play it as it used to. Simply put, the latest TB update apparently broke the mail arrival sound function. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

It works marvelous in BodhiLinux and I did not find any bugs yet, but should I, then I'll be happy to report them.
For me the problem is solved. I like to thank all for their contributions.

If you want to be notified that new mail is available I can recommend "mail-notification" which can also handle longer sound files. It is available via the Software Manager.
