LMDE double-wifi connection issues & constant pop-ups!

Post by chrisbarton »

Dear All

Greetings from a newbie linuxer. Well done to all working on LMDE, loving it! :D

However, please could you help me with my connectivity issues. I am constantly getting irritating pop-ups for authentication requests required by my wireless network. I am using LMDE-32 bit 201204 Cinnamon, installed on an external hard disk. I've done a lot of searching but can't seem to find the solution...

For some weird reason, I have two wifis listed: :?: (Is this normal??)

wlan0: Ralink Corp. RT2790 Wireless 802.11n 1T/2R PCIe
wlan1: Ralink 802.11 bg WLAN

wlan0 appears to be causing all the annoying requests, wlan1 seems to be okay. These pop-up requests are regular and constant!

As you can see from the lsusb output (extract) below, I use a D-Link DWL-G122:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 07d1:3c03 D-Link System AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless Adapter(rev.C1) [Ralink RT2571W]
Apart from the odd double-wifi problem, the next weird thing is that my conky set up (yes I'm brand new to linux but I'm pleased I already got this far) shows a totally different signal % than the two wifis, wlan0 and wlan1! What the?? (My conky file needed adjusting to point to wlan1 as it previously failed to give results from wlan0).

Could someone please advise me on what to do to:
1. Stop the infinite pop-ups for passwords etc relating to my wifi connection. It is driving me mad!
2. Simplify my wifi to have just one - i see no reason to have two, however I can't erase either of them using the network manager!
3. Get a correct signal % to show on wifi and/or conky!

Thanks in advance! :D
Christopher

p.s. Here is output using sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py, if it helps...........

Re: LMDE double-wifi connection issues & constant pop-ups!

Post by roger64 »

Hi

I have a related problem. I only use a Wifi connection. Usually, it works automatically without any problem. AHowever, sometimes, after a long suspend, I am requested for a password by different pop-ups and nothing is working any more. Then I stop, reboots, and it's OK again.

It's a quirk of network-manager, I cannot say more for the moment and I will observe it.

Two observations:
- network manager does not like to be hurried. I have to wait quietly it establishes or renew the connection. Usually not too long.
- these pop-ups seems to appear when, for some reason the wifi connection has already dropped (provider network is down or some other reason). Then nm is frantically looking for a solution and keep on trying and popping up even when it's useless.

It seems for me that these quirks are caused by an external network failure and nm is in fact not guilty of anything. This is my feeling and I do not pretend it's a general rule.

hi chrisbarton,

Noticed that your wlan0 is the newer "n" protocol and wlan1 is the older "bg".
You are probably connected using wlan1 (bg) and your system is trying to connect to wlan0 as well.
If you click Network Manager and Edit Connections...Wireless......your connection name for wlan0.......edit and untick the Connect automatically on wlan0, then Apply, it may solve your problem. Apologies if you have already done this. Apart from that I cannot offer much more help as newbie myself. hth
Cheers

Hi nobugs and roger64

Thanks for your comments. I had tried anything and everything to kill wlan0 but to no avail. It was somehow "linked" to wlan1. If I physically switched off wlan0 using the network manager it would also affect wlan1, but if I cancelled the endless pop-ups (literally by hitting the cancel button), then wlan1 would run fine, at least until the next relapse of pop-ups! Trying to delete a wifi connection did nothing - it would not let me do this.

Small update: Thanks to my rather gifted brother-in-law, who is a linux guru, he has managed to somehow disable wlan0 by presumably setting it to point to some static IP, thus stopping it from endlessly searching/scanning. So, whilst I can now still see the two wifis listed on my connections list, wlan0 now has "unmanaged" written against it. I'll try to find out what he did exactly and post it here later.

I still do not understand why I have two wifis running - this is very odd as the only device I have is the D-Link DWL-G122 and nothing else! It seems as if the pc box itself has some kind of internal wifi thing but I never identified this whilst using Windows on it, so what do you think could be going on here?

As for the last thing relating to conky, I do find it odd that the conky signal % differs from that shown against wlan1 in the connections list, despite conky pointing to wlan1 in the conkyrc file.
