adding KDE to Cinnamon Mint-12

Postby SaintDanBert on Mon Apr 30, 2012 8:09 pm

I have a Gnome Mint-12 running Cinnamon. How do I add the KDE desktop such that
one box can swap between complete Gnome+Cinnamon and complete KDE -- all running with Mint-12 "guts"?

Thanks in advance,

See here: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=100871 Once installed, you can change which session to start at the login screen (the gearwheel icon in the top right corner of the login box lets you select which session to start).

Do you know any differences between what one gets:
  1. after installing official Mint-12 KDE edition
  2. after installing official Mint-12 Gnome edition, then add KDE "full"

If a user selects to use KDE as their desktop, will one experience be any different from the other?

Thanks in advance,

Where does one go online to get a list of all of the packages that are shipped as the Mint-12 KDE edition -- or any distro for that matter?

Initially, I loaded standard Mint-12 with MATE and friends. Shortly I added Cinnamon and became a happier camper. Now I've loaded a group of packages for KDE and I can login choosing whichever desktop I want to use that session.

I want the package lists to compare what I have installed with what the KDE edition ships so that I might discover anything that I'm missing. (I already know that the KDE edition ships KDE 4.7 instead of 4.8 ... sigh ... I'll resolve that eventually ... once I learn how.)

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for this reminder.
Sorry that it took so long to acknowledge your help.
I knew there was a way to select the desktop during login, but this told me the details.

ASIDE -- I really dislike having usernames exposed as a selector during login. I wish I could replace that with a plain prompt: username _____ and password _____ . The username selector gives half of the security away before one even tries to force the door.

Cheers,
