Problem with AMD/ATI proprietary driver and Cinnamon

Problem with AMD/ATI proprietary driver and Cinnamon

Postby kseise on Sat Apr 28, 2012 8:45 am

I have installed the proprietary drivers through the LMDE repositories. I am running LMDE 64 bit and am experiencing strange flickering as if the window manager is crashing and restarting constantly. How can I start diagnosing this?

I just got this error message after one of my frequent crashes:
May 2 06:51:09 blackbox kernel: [120951.280226] cinnamon[5499]: segfault at 3240ad008 ip 00007fbf2646d618 sp 00007fffb3a1ea80 error 4 in libglib-2.0.so.0.3000.2[7fbf2640b000+f6000]

Does that help?

i've been having the same issue. Same ATI drivers. I did shut off the effects in the cinnamon settings, and it helped some but there is still some flickering going on.

I see in this thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=199&t=100847 that cinnamon is not compatible with compiz. I am running awn and might have some old compiz settings. How about you?

For experimental purposes, I installed KDE, LXDE, and XFCE on the same system. All three of them seem to perform just fine. The flickering is present in Cinnamon and Gnome.

I actually have compiz installed. Atleast the configuration manager was installed by default. It does not seem to affect any changes that I try to make. Should one remove this? actually the compiz kit and caboodle is installed. wondering if I should definately purge it...

EDIT: The following still seems to cause flickering after a bit.

My friend's Cinnamon works flawlessly when following these instructions for installing the proprietary driver (third post).

EDIT: I'll just put the instructions here:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove fglrx*
cd
mkdir catalyst11.12
cd catalyst11.12
wget -O ati-driver-installer-11-12.run http://goo.gl/BF35b

For 64 bit systems:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Then:
Code: Select all
chmod +x ati-driver-installer-11-12.run
sh ./ati-driver-installer-11-12.run
sudo aticonfig --initial -f
Sudo reboot

Interesting - will try this later, after I back-up with clonezilla. I have been running the open source drivers because gnome3 and cinnamon both play poorly with the proprietary drivers. But about to go to work on a night shift :(

compiz is not compatible with cinnamon or gnome-shell, if you want to use compiz use mate or gnome classic (aka fallback-mode). i can't say for sure that the flickering issues that you are experiencing are compiz-related (because ati support re. linux is really bad) but it's something you should rule out.

Eventually got round to trying this, everything goes well, but boots to a black screen, so I have restored with clonezilla.

Any fix for this or anybody working on it? This is a pretty big issue considering nobody who wants to use the proprietary driver (likely for setting the card on lower power modes so the fans aren't blaring on laptops) can't use any desktop based on GNOME 3... :(
