Fresh Install 201204 Extremely Slow

Postby AlphaSierra on Sun May 13, 2012 4:33 pm

Hi everyone. I just tried switching to LMDE from Ubuntu, and the results have been rather poor. I'm running Cinnamon currently, however the results are the same under MATE. For example, it took about five minutes to load firefox, and during that time the system totally locked up. While trying to open up Synaptic I was treated to a slideshow of my screen being progressively greyed out. There's also a horrible beep noise at the login screen, however I think I found a fix for that.

I'm just not sure why it's running so horribly slow. Even after I got PAE running nothing changed. I'm running 32bit LMDE using Cinnamon as my environment. My laptop specs are an Intel Core2 Duo T9400 at 2.53Ghz for the CPU, and 4GB of ram.

Has anyone else noticed this problem?

can you share with us some of your system specs
Code: Select all
inxi -Fc 0

also, open a terminal, type
Code: Select all
htop
and see if any process is hogging the system down.

It's gotten worse. It totally locked up when I tried to start firefox, or the terminal. Same problem using MATE. Had to CTRL+ALT+F2 to get the info.

the system should be more than enough to run that, no doubt there.
let's just test one thing (a looong shot) try to remove the battery, and start again, how does the system reacts?

It hung while waiting for /dev to populate.
