what's a good way to upgrade debian lxde to LMDE ?

Post by jarlax »

Hi there !

I use wheezy, lxde, wicd and wish to keep this conf under LMDE. Since a lxde's flavour LMDE isn't out yet, I read different posts about upgrading and pinning on this forum (also this one about xfce). However, since I read different things not specially focused on this issue, I wished to open a thread about lxde on LMDE from debian, to get some advices.

Now I just reinstalled a squeeze because [http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 9&p=580176]I accumulated mistakes and bugs with some previous trials[/url] and wished to start from the beginning.

So now I configured lxde with my settings on the stable version. I didn't make any preferences file yet, and I read there's no need any anymore

So what would be a better choice ? and how to do it at best ?
- Upgrade from squeeze - lxde to lmde ?
- Upgrade from squeeze to wheezy first, then to lmde ?

And how to manage the MATE/Cinnamon network-manager which gonna be install vs wicd ?

if you upgrade to wheezy you run the risk of upgrading to something more recent than LMDE.
so I would upgrade straight from squeeze to LMDE. which would be a nice experiment, I never thought of doing that.
if it works well I could upgrade a computer that was originnaly lenny, now runs squeeze and I can put LMDE if I wish (I would make a disk image first as its current state is valuable to me).

starting afresh with LMDE xfce would be reasonable, you would get some bloat but it can mitigated : you can install the lxde-core package which contains the basics (openbox, lxpanel, lxsession, pcmanfm). then you get a desktop with the xfce terminal emulator and other accessories (text editor, task manager etc.) and software (a bit too many things, yes ^^. hide them with lxmed)

I wondered getting the xfce.iso version or not. But in fact, since - also - lxde is still young, there are some stuff not yet perfect (I think about lxdm, for instance, or the power management). I had the use, until now, to replace them by some gnome's stuff, as gdm and gnome-power-management. (gdm, no gdm3 for that matter).

Then, I already gave a try to xfce, but I was not appealed. I couldn't get into the system thus, prefered lxde core.
So that's why I went to lxde through the gnome wave.

So, yesterday I tryed to follow this post about xfce, but of course, I arrived to a dead end : i wish not install xfce stuff, so I installed only "not xfce" packages, then, removed them back...

I still have the modified files as suggested in this post (sources.list, preferences, /etc/lsb-release - which has the xfce in the description -) the fact is the update told me the edition was outdated

This looks like a solution: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 46#p447534

Upgrade your testing install first by doing
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
add the LMDE repos, at the same time commenting the Debian repos
I would suggest using the "Latest" repos
# LMDE Latest repos
# deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main import backport romeo upstream
# deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
# deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
# deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

For more info about the various LMDE repos see:
LMDE Sources.list (s) : http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=197&t=79533
LMDE incoming repo (how-to) : http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=187&t=76556

Open Synaptic , click on the Origin tab, under LMDE repos install the package you want.
