yet another newbie that cant connect to the internet

hello. im gonna tell you my journey with linux. so one day i decided to learn more about computers... so i bought a programming book(how to progra. in c++ by deitel. its not so nice to read please tell me another book if you now) then i started searching and stuff and i got tremendously curious about hacking and computer stuff and all that workd wich is awesome. and more search lead to having linux. i did that distro chooser thing and it told me to download ubuntu or linux mint. i downloaded both. i installed ubuntu first. but i had some problems with some graphics stuff(my pc is old) so i installed linux mint 12. but i couldnt run it. so i started messing around with some acpi=off or nomodeset commands that made it work but only from the livecd. then maya came out and i downloaded it installled it with no problems backing up my data and erasing windows. copied my pictures and musoc to linux and installed win xp. as i was doing that i chose the wrong parition and deleted all my files. so i was pretty sad and upset. tried recuvs but it was useless. so here i am typing on my phone. what can i do to make internet work on linux mint 13?. because as soon as i login it says you are offline. i dont know anything about networks so i barely know what an ip is and stuff so try to be as clear and descriptive as possible. after all ive done to have this so id like it to work properly. i did mi homework and typed the comands frequently asked to. mi distro is maua 32bit. mate1.4

It would be more helpful if you gave us more information. So do you have Maya installed at the moment? I.e. can you boot into Mint 13? If you can, what are your system specs? To look these up open up a terminal and type in the command
