Make LMDE cinnamon look-n-feel same as "Main Edition"

Post by LinuxPudina »

Hi All,

I'm very new to Linux Mint. Now I'm using LMDE but before that have used the main edition for few days.

I was very happy and satisfied with Cinnamon under the main edition, but have seen it very very badly implemented inside LMDE. So how do I make the look n feel of Cinnamon under LMDE same as those under the Main edition. There are no left side favorite bar, no search field... nothing except a big plus towards the right which allows us to create n numbers of virtual desktops with no short ways to close them... its more like a bug than a feature.

Cinnamon under LMDE is so terrible, but do not want to switch to MATE yet as gnome 3 aka cinnamon is so revolutionary.

Hi,

Here are a couple of articles that you may find helpful. your running into dependency issue because your LMDE is not completely up to date.

Read these posts :

Before doing what these post say I would open synaptic package manager and under the edit tab check fix broken packages and apply.

hope this helps .

Hi,

I gave careful point-by-point reading of the articles pointed by "kc1d1" and seem to meet all the criteria mentioned.

I'm using the latest version of LMDE with kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64. My Cinnamon version is 1.4.0-lmde1.

IMHO, cinnamon shipped with LMDE is not much tweaked from its stock state or perhaps the developer gave more thought and time to polish up the main edition version and had no time left for our LMDE.

I hope this issue will be taken care of.

I'm not sure what you're referring to myself. Cinnamon in LMDE is as feature-complete as the version in the Maya. Perhaps you're eluding to, however, the fact that Maya ships with a newer version of Gnome, 3.4 versus the older 3.2 version that is currently in LMDE. Because of the newer version of Gnome (and thus Clutter) Cinnamon was patched in the main edition (referred to as UP1) to use the latest Clutter. If built against muffin 1.0.3, this branch provides a stable version of Cinnamon 1.4 with compatibility for Clutter 1.9 and Gnome 3.4.

Here's some guidance to adding more features to Cinnamon.

First, modify your repositories like this:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
add the following repositories, then save the file

Code: Select all

## Cinammon Desktop Themes & Extensions
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/bimsebasse/cinnamonextras/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/bimsebasse/cinnamonextras/ubuntu oneiric main

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mordant23/themes/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/mordant23/themes/ubuntu oneiric main

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/noobslab/themes/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/noobslab/themes/ubuntu oneiric main

## Screenlets development version
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/screenlets-dev/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/screenlets-dev/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main
**Warning** While it's never, ever a good idea to add Ubuntu repositories to Debian, in this case the Cinnamon themes and latest Screenlets packages are distro agnostic.

Open up your package manager and refresh. Now do a search for keyword "Cinnamon" and you'll find all sorts of cool new themes and applets you can add to make Cinnamon look and function better than ever.

Please find my desktop(LMDE with Cinnamon) screenshot. My main complaint(in layman term) is absence of Fav bar towards left and search field to jump to application.

I believe the Cinnamon in your Main Mint install is an old version. Most of the layout (especially the "overview") has changed since then.
No! I've the latest LMDE pack 4 (201204) and I also have the same problem. My top left "hot corner" seems exactly like LinuxPudina's and it lakes Favorite bar and the ability to search trough applications. Also cinnamon is completely based on gnome3 but I don't know why the developers removed these features from cinnamon.
Anyway I'm still looking for a solution to add Fav bar and search capability back to hot corner. Do you know any solution for that?
