SSHHHHhhh. Don't tell my wife....

Postby melbo on Wed Jan 30, 2008 1:40 am

Her laptop has been running LinuxMint for a few days now. She has no clue.

I had set her up with Firefox, Thunderbird, and OpenOffice a couple years ago.
Since she only uses Internet, email, Docs, and picture viewing /editing, (I taught her on Photoshop and GIMP is almost identical) she doesn't realize I swapped her OS on Friday night.

Both her Network printers work and she can still click a link to view her pics on the server upstairs. I'd say the WAF, (Wife Acceptance Factor) of the latest modern versions of Linux, (Darnya), fully passes the test.

Her only comments were "I love the new fonts you gave me" and "Why is this so much faster?" and "It's cool that the picture icons on my desktop are thumbnails"

She may never know. She also thinks all my Linux books and talk over the past 3 years were a little geeky. Don't tell her!

I won't tell but that is so cool! I'm taking lessons. I need to do the same thing at my house.

That is so funny. But how did she not notice the difference of the mint menu to the Windows Start menu?

Cheers,

The key is that she's not really a power user. Just the basics.
Mintmenu vs XP menu? I had always set her up with quick launch icons in XP and she still has her little FF and TB icons in the lower left hand corner  I don't really think she needs the menu the way I set all her normal stuff up at her fingertips.

And, I would periodically change her themes and layout for her anyway when I'd perform windows type pc maintenence. She's use to me changing things around she may think I just installed a new Theme. It is a fun experiment.

My point behind all of this is really as a testimony to the simplicity, ergonomics and stability that is LinuxMint.

Ah! I see. Change little things often then the big change is masked. :D

I must also testify to the ease of LinuxMint. I have set someone up on a laptop (never done that with Linux before myself) for browsing, email, etc. There haven't been any issues or great learning curve. And no more virus worries.

Thanks for the humourous approach. :P

   Darn it! I taught my wife too much... I've bragged too much about Mint and she knows all about it. On the plus side, she hates her Vista notebook, so I may have to do some changes eventually...

Almost BUSTED...
She was scrolling through her inbox and told me the screen just turned LOL.
She just found another desktop. I fixed her.

She's very suspicious right now.
Thank God she's not a Gamer!

It sounds like your Wife will come around to Linux even when she does find out! My Wife is a gamer so for now she is unwilling to switch.

Doesn't the splash screen say Linux Mint, and even the grub menu has Linux Mint on it.. She must have noticed, she just hasn't told you yet...

No offense to women, but I'm sure your wife is like a lot of women who notice cars, but not the details. I for one can spot a particular make and model just by its headlights, taillights or profile. Many of my female friends on the other hand notice nothing except, perhaps the color. I'm sure your wife has an odd sense that something is different but she probably thinks you just changed the default theme.

you can hide grub, just set the timeout to 0, and it won't stop on the grub screen. If you remove the silent/splash from the kernel boot line, it will scroll text across the screen. If you do an autologin in GDM it will go right into your desktop. Know one will notice what version of bootloader/linux/desktop your using until it fully booted.
