will installing opera wreck my system?

Postby ChickenPie4Tea on Mon May 21, 2012 8:04 am

I used MINT 10 before and installing opera was simple but in this Debian Version when I click on the opera package to install in Package manager It tells me
To be removed - mint-flashplugin
mint-meta-codecs

To be installed - Flashplugin-non free
-------------
so is it safe to install Opera? wont my system need those mint-meta-codecs !

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi ChickenPie4Tea

You should be fine. The mint-meta-codecs package is usually listed as an umbrella package that lists other packages that are needed.

If one actually opens the file they would find the following: Two directory's, changelog, compat, control, copyright, and rules files.

You can also download Opera directly from their site, un-tar the "tar.bz2" package and run Opera locally without installing it, similar with the way things are done with Firefox. A global install is also a possibility as well. In case you are unfamiliar with what I am referring to I will post a link that may help to inform you. http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/456/

Hope this helps.

Regards,

S :)

Thanks that's a good help for the future - in the meantime I installed Chrome and will see if I can get on with it. I do miss the integrated email you get with opera.

Wrong forum. LMDE is Debian based, NOT Ubuntu.

The proper plugin was the one in the OP, flashplugin-nonfree.

mint meta codecs is exactly what the name implies it is a metepackage.

Then try SeaMonkey (Mozilla's Internet Suite).
