Please upgrade the kernel to 3.3.6 or higher as the one you are using has a Nvidia graphic card issues. This is an issue with the Ubuntu release as well, this bug is also in the kernel you are using for the Debian release. A huge number of people are affected by this bug. The bug will not allow us to boot into any graphical interface.

What great news! Although I've been running the RC so not much has changed. Cinnamon desktop here, I couldn't be happier with Mint, it works great right out of the box. I dual boot with XP, and I haven't booted into Windows in months. Mint does everything I need.

I don't think it will work - IIRC apt-get dist-upgrade means doing an upgrade that requires uninstalling or installing packages. It's very complicated to upgrade from Mint 12.

No. It's the actual upgrade that's the hard part. Anyone can change lisa to maya and oneiric to precise, but you have to be very experienced with apt to do the upgrade. Things break when you upgrade from one release to the next. I actually did a fresh install of lisa in VBox and tried upgrading - granted, I didn't spend much time on it, but the Mint search plugin IIRC had problems, and that caused the entire upgrade to stop (yes I know if I took the time to fix this I could, but I was kind of busy and it's a headache).

update: installed kernel 3.4 nvidia would not install, seems linux has big problems at the moment, too many new things, just get sorted with heaps of stuff, then they change everything

I tested the MATE 13 RC pretty much from the moment it was available, on my newest computer and hardly any issues at all, felt solid right out of the gate. But with Ubuntu 12.04/Mint 13 on my computers 3-8 years old, there were some issues. My older desktop just refused to have anything to do with the new buntu/mint, buggy and just unusable where the buntu 11x/mint 12 worked well on it. On my wife's Acer computer, about 3 years old, everything worked well but it caught the new buntu suspend bug, it won't come out of suspend. I've seen this blamed on the 3.2 kernel, but that kernel runs fine on the same machine with Mint Debian upgraded to 3.2 kernel.
Speaking of Debian, since it looks like LXDE is getting dropped, and since the newer kernels and buntus are leaving some older hardware in the dust, maybe it's time to look at doing a Debian Stable Mint that will cause the Mint developers fewer headaches and give users with older hardware a place to go? Mint Debian Stable MATE would be just about perfect with enabled backports. Just a thought

I agree, although I've never done an upgrade where absolutely nothing broke (maybe just my experience).

I did some major upgrades with a couple of Debian machine, and all went fine. ... But I know that problem from other Ubuntu users.

Dear: Well, actually I have a tremendous disappointment: I have just downloaded the final version of Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon and Mate, and it turns out the same problems that I described previously are still there. The Network Manager works horribly wrong, I could not connect to the Internet using the live DVD, I put the username and password and continue to ask me many times and never unable to connect. A reverend and absolute disaster!!

Neither does the good old wizard "sudo pppoeconf", the wizard starts, it requests the data, says that all is well, yet the Internet is not!! Why so far in all the live-cd or live-dvd Debian based it did work (since Linux Mint 7 and up to Linux Mint 12) worked well, even more, in the latest versions of Kubuntu and Ubuntu (12.04) also ran right. And to make things worse, I found heavier final versions that the RC versions. If this is a LTS release, it really is awful !!!!

I do not want to make a snap judgment, but if this is the Linux Mint with support for 5 years, have really screwed, and very : If this is to make the team Linux Mint, I'm sorry, but the truth is that I go elsewhere. Errors are serious enough, maybe you install it and test it, but the fact that seeing these horrors in the live DVD, one wonders whether it is worth installing or not (just in case I have my image already downloaded Kubuntu 12.04). A pity!!

I installed 64bit MATE. So far so good. It looks like the best distro since LM10 main. I tried at least 15 editions and none of them were on the level of LM10. It's a pity that so many people had to worked so hard to reach the LM10 gnome quality. But now with Maya I am relived. Fingers crossed. Everything works (including panel applets and videothumbnailing in filemanager) except the start up brightness but there are fixes for that outhere, I beleive.

I found workaround for this problem in my LM12 - adding one line to /etc/rc.local before exit 0.

Number is power of brightness from 0 to 10 (only whole numbers).

You think we're screwed because you can't connect to the internet on a liveDVD? First of all, sudo ppoeconf doesn't work on the liveDVD (you have to install to get it to work, unless this has changed since the RC). Second of all, how are you connected? A wireless adapter? If it is a wireless adapter, what type?
