Random freeze/hang

Postby mrchippy on Mon Jan 03, 2011 12:10 am

I have been running Linux mint for a few weeks now and during several occasions where it has randomly crashed. there is no specific thing i am doing that i can see that causes the hang. It just sits there with no keyboard or mouse response and the sound dose a broken record type thing, plays the last few seconds of audio over and over again. my specs are
phenom 2 X6 1090t
8G 1600 ddr3 ram
sapphire radeon hd 5850
wd 1tb hdd
asus mobo

what causes this hang/freeze and is there a way to fix it with out a restart?

It is not possible to give an answer to your question given the information you provide, please read the forum rules about providing information. You should check the system logs (Administration | Log file viewer) after you have recovered from the hang to attempt to ascertain what the system was doing at the time , it may be a particular application or driver but more information would be required.

I'm having this same problem. Which logs would you recommend looking at?

Bumping this topic. It's happening a few times a day now. Extremely frustrating. Any advice would be appreciated. My specs are above, but I don't know where else to look.

It seems to be related to Banshee. I tried going without music for 2 days and there wasn't a freeze. The interesting thing is, once it froze while Banshee was open but not playing.

Nevermind, I just had one while trying to view a video in Firefox. It does, however, always seem to happen when some sort sound is playing...
