[SOLVED] Magnet Links & Chrome

Postby mroctopus on Fri May 25, 2012 10:06 pm

Hello,
I am running Mint 13 MATE 64bit and I want to get magnet links working. The browser I am using is Chromium and I am having a hard time figuring out how to make it send the links to the bittorrent client. So far Ive figured out I need to edit xdg-open somehow and add some sort of script, but past that I am having a difficult time understanding. Right now I am trying to use the VUZE torrent client, but I am open to using others. Could anyone help me out and tell me how to edit the xdg-open file, and where to put the code there in?
Thanks!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I figured it out! Its not perfect, as it requires you use a specific Chrome plugin and that you use Transmission as your BitTorrent client, but that aside it works very well.

Here is what to do:
1. Install ".torrent to Transmission" plugin for Chrome Here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... jjiclnoekb

2. Go into Transmission's preferences and click on the web tab. Select "Enable Web Client" and create a username and password if you want. (If you make the username & password, you will need to input those into the plugin inside chrome)

Done! Now all you have to do to add magnet links to Transmission is right click and select ".torrent to Transmission"

I don't like Transmission, i prefer tixati since you can pick files to download. In case of manget just copy the magnet link then in tixati, add magnet using the magnet url

Or... you can just grab and drop the magnet link into transmission environment :)
