Installing Synkron on LMDE 64bit

Postby dmhm on Thu May 24, 2012 9:07 pm

We have (debian based) openmediavault running from a USB flash drive on a server used to backup/synchronize the files of a network that includes a couple of Win7 notebook computers and this desktop running the latest LMDE.

The Win7 notebooks (one with RAID 0) use Synkron (available from Sourceforge), which is not found in the LMDE repositories (AFAIK), to synchronize with the openmediavault backup server. All computers and the printer are wired to a Linksys gigabit ethernet switch. A version of Synkron for Linux can be downloaded in a tar.gz format which I (frankly) don't know how to install.

So the purpose of ths post is to ask: Is anyone here using Synkron successfully w/ LMDE and if so, what do I need to do to get it working on this LMDE desktop so I can back up and synchronize my data on the 2 disk openmediavault server with RAID1?

Or

Is there something else I can use instead for this purpose (i.e. DirSyncPro, Lucky Backup, Unison, Conduit or Grsync - all installable via LMDE's Package Manager or a Mate Terminal)? Any constructive recommendations made will be appreciated.

TIA

Hope I was of some help

Big time help. That was an excellent breakdown, which I will attempt to implement later today (it's 3am here), since Synkron did a good job on the win7 machines after we were able to set it up and get it to work.

OTOH, if someone has a comment regarding the use of DirSyncPro, Lucky Backup, Unison, Conduit or Grsync (which I have already installed and will try to get working) on LMDE, that would be useful too.

Thanks again, crborga.

No problem after seeing your post it made me interested in this software so I gave it a whirl. Also, looks like installing system wide is easy just do
Code: Select all
sudo cp synkron /usr/bin/synkron

We are using it with excellent results on Win7 but haven't been able to install it yet to LMDE. Priscila has been using that computer and she will continue this dialogue to tell you what she did and what happened.

Hello crborga, thank you very much for your answer, your instructions are very clear, unfortunately, I am stuck. I'm new at trying this operative system, but I've learned a lot in the last week. I followed your steps to install and build the scripts for squirrel, but the command to build it didn't work, I can access the squirrel file easily, but terminal puts a message saying that the file "make-debian-packages" does not exist. Also tried with synaptic, but the package is not available on the list managed by this program. I decompressed the squirrel file in different sites, such as desk and program files, but with the same result, so now I am trying to know more about the commands that I can use to be able to build the scripts or a different way to install this program and I'd really appreciate if you could help me, please. Have a nice day :)
