Have been searching to find simular problem (solved) on this forum, but no..
Running Linux Mint 13 Cinnamon x64
This problem started about 2 week ago.
A update would appear in mintupdate - started mintupdate (login) - started counting (repository chck) - then a error would appear in the end.
But usally the update would be shown and downloaded and installed.
After a little while the updatemanager would show a X
When I run (in terminal) apt-get update: (watch the last lines)
