Can't run mp4 in VLC or gnomeplayer in Mate

Since installing Mint13 (Mate) cannot see video mp4 files in VLC or other players. Audio works. MP4 video only appears under Gnome classic (no effects).

I also have similar problem. I installed Linux Mint 13 mate and totem player is not able to play many mp4 files. It lags when it plays mpg files and some large divx files.
However, all formats play well using VLC. installing some codec including ubuntu-restricted-extras didn't help.

found a solution:

For 64 bit install:
sudo mv /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak
For 32 bit install:
sudo mv /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/gstreamer-0.10/libgstvideoparsersbad.so.bak

It works for gnomeplayer. Since this problem only occurs to gnome player but not VLC in my computer. So I do not know if it will fix the problem for your VLC.
