kernel panic booting Live CD

Post by gab »

Booting Live CD results in a kernel panic
Last lines say BAD EIP Value
EIP: [<31c00f01>] 0x31c00f01 SS:ESP 0068:df611f33
Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

It also makes reference to SMP further up the screen

setup is :-
Asrock 2Core1333-2.66G with 2140 core 2 processor

Some background info :-
Did read other forums (ubuntu) which suggested trying the 64 bit version. Have since found out that all 32 bit linux versions I try to install all come up with a Kerenl panic when booting the liveCD apart from PCLOS Gnome 2.21.2 (with kernel 2.6.22.15), eg, Ubunto, Kubuntu, Mepis, PClinux.
However, 64 bit versions of Ubunut,Kubuntu,Mepis install OK.

Tried the usual recommendations of NOAPIC and NOLAPIC parameters but no luck

Please help

There are very few requests for help for kernel panic, actually I can't remember any
I did get kernel panic myself once when I made some mistake I've forgotten now :)
As always - did you check the md5sum and burned slowly?
I intend to add more about motherboard problems in the troubleshooter if I get the time (which I think I will soon)
One option to try is irqpoll
I've looked at the specs for the mobo.
Do you use the built in vga? Do you overclock?

board and chip come pre-overclocked but have un-clocked it and it still fails
I am convinced its something to do with SMP and the core 2.
May try remastering it with a newer kernel for smp if I can find some instructions

There is no problem with dual core (not with Daryna anyway)
Does this mobo handle dual core differently?
Ubuntu has had SMP support quite a while now
However I agree that it's likely that the mobo is the culprit
