I think the Mp3tag sw for Window$ is not proprietary but just I've found a cool Linux alternative to that - Puddletag -> http://puddletag.sourceforge.net

This is a useful list, especially for those still using Windows apps. However, the list is almost 3 years old now and could stand a revision.

The article uses the term "open source" to describe free software, and uses the word "free" in the context of "no cost", a common mistake. Open source is not necessarily free software, and "free" software is not necessarily free in terms of cost! Free software comes under the jurisdiction of the GPL and its derivatives, and therefore is subject to the copyleft provisions of the GPL. Open source software may or may not be covered under the GPL and therefore is not necessarily "Free" software. This might be seen as nitpicking, but these terms have important legal definitions in the world of GNU/Linux. Other terms have been suggested and used to describe non-proproetray software, many of them ambiguous and confusing, and even contradictory.

Richard Stallman, author of the General Public License and its derivatives, specifies the use of the term "Free software" to describe software which comes under the GPL and can therefore be copied, modified, installed and distributed without restriction provided the GPL documentation remains attached to the software.

Wow ... it has been over three years since I started this thread

It's also been almost as long since I came to visit.

Decided to get back into Linux Mint 11 main edition 32bit and I'm really like it ... installed it last night.

I wanted to replace my windows 7 on my HDTV pc with Mint but ran into a snag trying to play Blu-Ray disks.

From what I've read you need to get MAKEMKV and then rip to hdd or stream to a player like VLC.

Sounds like more trouble than it's worth so I left windows 7 on the TV pc and started playing with Mint 11 on and other and here I am

I'd add Karbon from the Calligra Suite as alternative to Microsoft Publisher. I find it easier to work with then Scribus. It supports Vector and is under active development. The Calligra Suite is a graphic art and office suite by KDE created from KOffice in 2010.

Karbon is a vector-graphics application primarily used for making illustrations (drawings). It's akin to Inkscape and the Windows analogue is CorelDraw and Adobe Illustrator.

Scribus, OTOH, is a Desktop Publishing (DTP) application, geared more for laying out pages for printing or reading (e.g. newspapers, magazines, certificates, et. al.), and contains a mixture of text and graphical elements (but more on text, usually). Windows analogue to Scribus include Microsoft Publisher, Adobe PageMaker and InDesign.

Although they are related to each other, both illustration and DTP applications have some degree of differences. I use both, BTW, depending on the kind of work done:

Inkscape - for illustrations, drawings, clipart, etc.
Scribus - for page layouts/desktop publishing

Not sure why I rarely see this anywhere. It is very robust, I never have problems with it. If it does break after an update it gets fixed.

I use OpenOffice and GnuCash a lot on my Mint laptop that I bought from Lazada and I agree with some other members here that technical applications are still behind in terms of the number of them that are open source.
