No, it smells nothing like Cinnamon, but of Mint. I am using Mate and suffer freezes every single day. While I may continue to use Mint, my resentment grows, especially as the views for this issue mount into the thousands (2,105 right now) while being ignored by "support". And to the chap who suspects Java -- I have serious doubts. I also recommend for folks to refrain from trying every suggestion posted here; If you are not yet ready to leave Mint, perhaps wait until someone has more than a little fickle luck with their strange methods. And with a good deal of certainty, there are plenty of other bugs to catch in the meantime if you look.

At first I thought it was Docky's fault, but since that first day I haven't been using it at all and the problem is still there. Apart from that I installed GIMP 2.8, but the freezing predates that.

I guess the question is then, is Docky still installed? If it is then it might not matter whether you use it or not. The app and all it's dependencies are still installed and that might be what's affecting the system, not the actual use of it.

Even if you removed Docky the dependencies are still installed unless you ran "sudo apt-get autoremove" after you removed Docky.

Just passing on some info is all. :)
I removed Docky and Cairo (I forgot I had that as well) and I'm still able to crash it with Writer. So it can't be the docks. I'm gonna do a clean install on my PC later in the day just to see how it will behave.

I get the failures with three versions of Sun Java, 1.6.0_24, 1.6.0_32 and 1.7. It's not Java it's something else, maybe the chap who fixed it by changing his Java got something else changed by the Java install that repaired it.

I have the same problem: Libreoffice hangs my laptop with a fresh install of LM 13 Maya final release 32 bits. It's installed on a Eee PC laptop (Asus), with CPU Atom N 450, Intel graphics, 1 GB RAM. LM is the only system installed. I disabled hardware acceleration on Libbreoffice.
Waiting for a solution, I'm using LM13 with GNOME classic - no effects and there aren't any freezes. Also on other machines (two desktops) I use LMDE with cinnamon without problems.

What about your system with the propietary driver disabled?

To everyone else: Please calm down and take some time do this very basic and simple test:

Boot from a Maya Cinnamon live-DVD or live-CD and watch carefully for those misterious freezes.
If there is no freeze while using the "live" mode, then that's a problem it was introduced by something you've installed (driver, software or update) after the definitive installation of Maya.

Now back in your "normal" system (not "live" mode), wait until a freeze happens, then carefully annotate at what time it happened, reboot your machine and once it's running again, open a terminal and execute this command:

Code: Select all

gnome-system-log
At that window select "syslog" or "Xorg.0.log", try locating any error messages at the same time or slightly before the freeze happened and post them here.

For what it's worth, my Dell Inspiron 11z is on day two with no problems since upgrading up-gradable packages in Synaptic: There were about six packages relating to xorg and the 3.2 generic kernal. It's an easy step that requires no outside ppas, java purge and installations, etc. before those upgrades it would hang up in the middle of all sorts of operations, from copy and paste into libreoffice to downloading a file in Chrome. I've been enjoying what appears to be a nice stable system now that's behaved as expected.

This must be some weird hardware compatibility glitch in Mint. it doesn't seem to be inherited from upstream Ubuntu, because I've run Precise on the same machines without issue. My System76 machine, solid Intel hardware that's run 11.10 and 12.04, couldn't get through 5 minutes of a live Mint session without hanging. It would hang on an application launch or even launching the Menu. Now the same machine is running Cinnamon 1.4 on Precise perfectly.

This is a real head-scratcher. I'm sure the Mint team will figure it out soon. I hope they do.

For those that have system freezes on Cinnamon only when using Libre Office, proxima_centauri has just posted a possible workaround on the other topic on this linux mint13 cinnamon hang when open libre office.

Hello,
my experiences with 13 are ... bad.
Had a 12 running stable for a year or so, used it for xbmc and backups.
Now. New Harddrive, new Linux. 13/cinnamon. Nice looking, but freezes.
Fresh installation + XBMC, shows 30-50% cpu usage on a q9550 - confused ?
Changed graphics driver from standard to nvidia-current. XBMC-CPU now 0% = fine.
play a film -> XBMC crashes the machine, Freeze.
Ok, Desktop Effects off - XBMC plays film.
Now - Nautilus - Shares. Not working for myself from Win7->Linux, permission denied, same user, same workgroup, same password. Guest Access works.
I COULD check samba, but i won't.
Need another user, my wife should also do her backups on Linux-Shares.
Logoff myself - Mint freeze. No console, no nothing.
download nvidia drivers, after installation, no X. confused ? ok, i could have a look in ... no.
Back to debian.

This is excellent advice so please don't ignore it. The more "debug" information that can be gathered the better.

Now let's add feadanaigh's findings: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 54#p585849
And kmb42vt's: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 20#p589504

So for this particular case, I bet is MDM messing with the system.

The first thing to try would be this:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm
Anyone else can provide a syslog of the freeze?

For whatever it's worth:
On an 8 year old desktop PC everything related to Ubuntu 12.04 had this same freezing:
Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity, Fallback, MATE, Xfce4.
Kubuntu 12.04, Xubuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 12.04, and Mint 13 MATE. Lubuntu 12.04 froze up from live cd when I stuck in a usb stick. I think this is a buntu bug, I think it is erratic, intermittent, and may be hard to fix :( On the same computer I'm using Xubuntu 11.10 with no issues, also SolusOS with no issues, had Mint 11 on it with no issues. Something new in Ubuntu is causing the issue for me, can't say what's causing everyone else's problems.

OK, I did a clean install of LM13 Cinnamon on my PC (all my previous post were regarding my laptop). It's been running for three hours straight with no problems. Things I altered after installation: changed system fonts, added Microsoft fonts, disabled effects, customized my panel layout, added the "Places" applet. No additional programs were installed. All this time I've been organizing the mess on my hard drives, so I've got multiple windows with multiple tabs open in Nautilus, with Firefox and Banshee in the background. So far, writer hasn't been causing any problems.

PC specs:

1 GB ram
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ × 2
Nvidia GeForce 7300 (I think)
32-bit LM13 Cinnamon

Hmmm... but you installed lightDM, then uninstalled it and re-installed MDM, and no more freezes, right?

Therefore I redouble my bet. If it's all about MDM, this should work:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm

So, an interesting wrinkle:

Using Cinnamon on Ubuntu 12.04, I was moving items around in the Mint menu and got the same lock up -- everything but the cursor. I had to force close and reboot but when I opened gnome log, I had nothing logged earlier than my reboot, so I can't help with the errors. I've run the same machine for two months without a single freeze or lock up. under standard precise...

EDIT: When I rebooted, my desktop effects were disabled... Maybe this is a Cinnamon issue.

Hah! Loaded LM 13/Cinnamon 32 bit release onto my old ThinkPad R61 (which ran LM 12/Cinnamon flawlessly) and as soon as I inserted a table into a LibreOffice Writer document and started typing into the table, Cinnamon locked up.

Intel Mobile Centrino dual core, 2GB memory, 100 GB/7500 RPM HDD, Intel 965 chipset and Intel X3100 HD graphics.

My desktop doesn't exhibit the problem at all though.

Intel Core 2 Quad, 8GB DDR2, Intel chipset (? number) and Nvidia GT 430 video card w/10 GB DDR3 using the 295 Nvidia driver

I'll do some additional troubleshooting tomorrow and post the resulting log entires here.
