Mint 12 update FROZEN

Hi , Could anyone assist with this : I only run Mint 12 on my PC. I was trying to see if I could backup to USB and followed advice that
I had to install "Remaksys" program so (not too clear what I did). one line was to "sudo apt-get install update && sudo apt-get install upgrade.
Now my system froze and no matter what I did nothing worked.
So I installed mint 12 on sda2 to get this up so I could find out the problem.

Is there a way I can import all my stuff from sda1 to sda 2 as I don't really want to go through it all again.

Using a liveCD/USB you should be able to copy you home directory over to the new install and this will have lots of your settings and docs downloads etc but you will have to reinstall any programs you had on the the original install.

the only problem with that is that I now know that I went to update to the new pack4 and the sda1 desktop is frozen solid.

I have tries most of what I know (not much) to forum search .....but It still stays frozen, can't get terminal to open, F 1 no go and that is
why I had to do second install to sda2.
Atm I have 250 GB with mint12 frozen that I can't access. If nothing can be done I 'll bit the bullet and do complete reinstall
